What can a 22-250 Rem 700 be converted to??

I have a chart in one of my magazines which shows what a "wore out" rifle can be converted to but I can't seem to find it. It was within the last year or two of Guns and Ammo or Shooting Times. I ask because I found a Rem 700 Sendero SS in 22-250. I suspect the barrel is wore out but the gun could be rebarreled into something else and would make a great platform for a project gun.

Anyone know where I can find this information? I would like to see if any of my options would be worthy projects.

Just about anything with the same case head size and a similar length, .308 win, 243 win, 6mm rem,244 rem,7-08, 260 rem. I'm sure I forgot a few. this list will grow in the next few days...

Idle curiosity: Are you shooting it, and getting low-rent, really bad groups? Are you "agin" the .22-250?

As far as the barrel being "wore out", have you checked its crown for dings? Have you tried to see if there is erosion in the throat? This latter could be cured by having a competent gunsmith set the barrel back by one turn and ream the chamber. And, after all, the barrel itself has been "broken in". :)

How's the bedding of the stock? Scope mount screws all "right and tight"?

Yeah - just how "shot out" is it? Get some Sweet's, and clean the bejeezus outta the thing - you might be surprised...

FWIW, I "shot out" a barrel over the weekend - Took one of my old benchrest barrels that was no longer up to BR standards, and initially formed a whole bunch of 6PPC brass... Didn't really take the time to clean it or let it cool, and groups went from about 1/2" up to about an inch or so over the course of the afternoon.

Oh no, jumping the gun here (no pun intended). I spotted this rifle in a dealer's used rack and assumed someone shot it till the barrel wore out. It may be just fine and someone was hard up for cash. I am just always a little cautious of used varmint rifles. I just thought a Sendero would be a good project rifle because it is a Rem 700 which is easily modified and it already comes with a good stock. The price on it is high in my mind $889 with a Leupold mounted on it in 3-9X. If my dealer comes down on it, I may be interested in it.

I was just wondering what could be done with it. Would a 6mm-284 work then just out of curiosity?

Thanks guys.

I'd re-think that one

About 2 years ago I bought an unfired 700 VS 22-250 (which is probably what this one is) for $550. Got a 4x16 x 50 B&L 4000 for $350. Had a new rig for what they want for this one. Also, unless you're going to re-barrel, a 3x9 is a little light for a 22-250. I'd be thinking 4x16 up to 24x. Depends on what you want to do, but it's an expensive way to start....then again, it's your money.

A couple months ago I got a .25-06 with a M70 receiver, McGowen barrel, customer trigger, top of the line Burris scope, and Fajen stock for $495. Just shows what you can do with a little patience. Unless you're a lot different than us regular folks it's a lot easier to spend money than make it. I take extreme pleasure in being cheap...oops, I mean frugal. Good luck and have fun.

Well, I ain't ashamed. I'm a cheapskate! :D

I suggest taking five $100 bills and two $50s. Point to the rig and lay down $500 on the counter. If he sez no, walk off. You can come back and lay another $50 down and see what happens.

Hey! You can always go up, if you're really hot to have it. But point out that it's insufficient scope for your purpose, and that it's probably all worn out in the throat, anyway.

Ya gotta learn to dicker, son! Ya gotta make that guy truly believe you're doing him a favor by taking that ol' dawg off his hands!

You guys have never met this dealer. He has one hell of a business - the lowest new prices on most guns for hundreds of miles and a huge assortment of used rifles, shotguns and handguns. I have seen people drive from Alabama to here (KY) to get three Benelli SBE's. Anyway he has big pink signs all over the place in the store and on the front door that in a polite way say "I don't have time to dicker on my prices". One buddy got him down $20 once on two used guns and was amazed. He is the only one I know who has been that successful. So dickering is out of the question for him, and I am fully capable of dickering - I got another dealer to come down to $435 on a S&W 610 yesterday from $519.

Sorry to confuse some, the 22-250 is obviously short action but it is stainless with a fluted barrel and I tend to refer to those just as "Sendero's".

I just bought two revolvers in a week so I am going to let this one pass and try to let the checkbook recover from its wounds...

Just for what it's worth... At $8xx for a used rifle...

You can buy a new "action" at Wally World for $400.

Send it off and have a new match grade barrel put on for another $400.

Then, if you so desire, you can drop it in a better stock for $250 or so...

I'm kinda curious...

If that .22-250 barrel is really "shot out" or not. Maybe the throat is eroded, but that's not the end of the road for a fast .22-bore rifle. Any number of competent riflesmiths can set the barrel back a thread or two, clean up the chamber and throat with the reamer, and you basically have a new .22-250 with a barrel that's only a fraction of an inch shorter than original. That, or you can even have it reamed to .22-250 Ackley Improved, so you can fire factory .22-250 ammo, as well as your own Ackley handloads, woohoo! :D
