i live in lower alabam (LA, yes i have heard all the jokes). i am in the market to buy a hunting rifle, i am leaning towards a benali r1. but what caliber? 30-06 or 300wsm?

Andalusia

Well I've done a bit of hunt'n in LA, down in the Blue Springs WMA.

I used my ole triple deuce fer down yonder. It's light and easy ta pack in and use with an ole man climber.

Here's the CZ here

and a few taken with the CZ triple deuce

It werks great on white tail!!!!

Unless you "just gotta" have a thirty caliber, why bother? Odds are that your distances won't be all that much, and you won't be dealing with deer over 200 pounds live weight.

I wouldn't go with a larger cartridge than a 7mm08. It makes for a lighter rifle and less recoil. Nothing wrong with a .243, for that matter.

Yeah, I like the '06. I started loading for it in 1950--but that doesn't mean I think it's the be-all and end-all when there are plenty of equally-good deer cartridges around...

.270 win. does an adequate job also;) I do wish I had a dollar for every deer killed with the 3006!:D phycobily what got a hold on them neck roasts??? Alot of good eating cut in half. pm me for a killer way to cook them necks!!

I'm pretty much with Art. I don't think a .30 caliber would be my first choice; particulary one's with a higher capacity case under the bullet...

unless you're buying the rifle with intentions of hunting bigger critters somewhere.

Lighter calibers are easier to shoot well, and are more pleasant to shoot. Something like a .243, 7mm-08, 7mm Mauser, .257 Roberts or some such would serve your needs well.

Well of the 2 you mentioned, I would vote for the 30-06. Less expensive to shoot, ammo readily available, and much much easier on the shoulder than the magnum.

I also really like my 270 win and a lot of my friends swear by the .243. Someone also mentioned the 7mm-08. My brother bought one last year and I can tell you they are very easy on the shoulder and have a good reputation on the whitetails.

Enjoy your shopping and your hunting:)

What he said. 30.06 will be just fine.....:)

Nut'n went ta waste I guarantee ya. I use everything on a deer. I take then necks and partially freeze them then I get the saw-aw out and slice them about 2" thick. Makes GREAT stews!

The cotten pick'n coyotes STARVE around me!!!!

Those deer were hang'n in a cole storage fer 3 days and I always cut them that way ta get the wind pipe and other crap out.

and someone else said sum'n about he ain't gunna get a deer over 200 pounds, well mister I reckon you ain't never hunt'd in bama. That 8 I'm hold'n was 210 on the hoof...

Both the 30-06 and 300WSM are a bit much for the area that you hunt in. For local deer hunting, I use the 25-06. When I go out of state, I use my 300WM (not WSM). If you intend to hunt out of state occasionally, then perhaps the 30-06 would be a good choice. Yes, I now reside in LA (lower Alabama).

I agree with Art.
If your ranges aint past 250-300yds, I would seriously consider the 243. I know for a fact it will drop a big mountain mulie with a neck shot instantly at 300yds with a 95gr SST.

Way less recoil and more pleasant to shoot.

My wife has the .243, and I have a 30-06. I like them both, and reload them both. We use them for deer. There is no doubt that .243 will take them out without a problem. She has got all she shot at with one shot. I myself prefer the 30-06. No real reason just for whitetail just me.

Look at a lever action Marlin 30/30 with Leverrevolution ammo. Plenty of distance and power in a sweet gun. Marlin chambers these in three calibers in the .30 range. The Marlin .308 sounds nice also. Bot the Hornady ammo mentioned above changes the 30/30 into another dimension. The polymer tip and a little hotter load is a great idea.
