What caliber is this H&R?

A buddy of mine recently aquired an H&R revolver. The person that sold it to him said it was .38. He purchased a box of 38 spl's and the shell poked out the end by about a quarter of an inch. The bullet itself, did not fit snug or close to snug in the barrel. The only markings on the gun are the brand, and on the inside of the cylinder. it says 540. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Gun is break action. 5 shot. Stainless steel 3 inch barrel if I remember correctly. DA/SA. About same size as SW J-frame.

Thanks for any replies.

Mike P. is right on. There are numerous "38s" and you have to make sure which one your gun takes. Some are the same except for name, like the .38 S&W (not the longer and more common .38 S&W Special) is also known as the .38 British or .38/200.

This H&R is probably an oldtimer and these were not high quality guns when they were new. I would caution against shooting it at all. There's a reason they often sell for $50-$75.
