What Bullet & why?

Searching for information regarding the various bullet types (wc,swc, jhp, fmj, fmtc, etc...), but have yet to find info on their uses or how effective they are: Hunting vs self defense vs target practice. anyone know of any sites or books?

The reason why we have so many varieties of bullets is due to all the theories flying around. At the end, it all boils down to personal preference and what mechanically will feed and shoot best in a particular firearm. For every piece of documentation or book that is published about bullet types and ballistics, there exist another document to counter the findings and conclusions of the first. Truly, the only way to really gain this knowledge is by experimenting yourself, draw your own conclusions. They will be just as good as the next guys.

Well, this is the site.

A wad-cutter or semi-wad-cutter bullet is used on paper to make a hole which is easy to score. The SWC feeds far more reliably in a semi-auto than a flat-front WC.

FMJ or RN or "hardball" feeds reliably in semi-autos, but is the least effective in killing game or stopping people.

Hollow points' purpose is two-fold. First, expand to a larger than bore-size to create more internal damage, delivering its energy mostly within the target and thus be a more effective "stopper"; and second, to reduce the risk of over-penetration on through a bad guy and into a good guy.

Hope this helps, Art
