What are the rules?

What are the gun rules in the good old USA. They stink in Australia no pump or semi auto shotties and no handguns except for shooting paper. And all guns must be locked up at all times and ammo must be stored seperatly.

Each state regulaes their own guns. The rules vary from state to state and sometimes cities have created there own, more restrictive rules. Generally most states have varying degrees of permissive gun ownership, some are Draconian but I don't think any are as bad as Australia or England. For state by state rules, go to www.packing.org .

tegemu is partially correct, but a lot wrong. States can regulate guns but only so far as the regulations are within federal guidelines, so they don't actually set their own regulations as indicated by tegemu. States can't make full auto guns not be class III licensed, allow sales to minors, etc. However, they can further regulate what the federal government has regulated. For example, .50 BMG is allowed by federal law, but California doesnt' allow it.

I am a Virginian. We can own rifles/shotguns/handguns. We store them however we fancy. Carrying guns about is legal but we typically carry concealed handguns so as to not offend anyone. We need a permit to carry concealed weapons, but such permits can only be denied for specific reasons such as a criminal past ... my permit cost $15 for five years. It's more complicated to get permits for suppressed or automatic weapons, but it can be done.

I'm not sure if its still number one but there used to be a top ten dumbest laws in the country. the city that i live 20 miles from used to have the number one every year. "its unlawful to detonate any nuclear device within city limits." they also have a law that you cant transport your rifles or shotguns on a gun rack.

Well, Maas and Aussiehunta, even here in Indiana, it is considered inexcusably rude to detonate a nuclear device within city limits. Persons so doing are liable to be socially snubbed.

Otherwise it's pretty good. This is kind of a rough idea: You have to have a carry permit for certain types of short pistol-grip shotguns or to carry any sort of handgun (unless it is unloaded and in the trunk/boot of your car) but the permit is available to anyone who is not a convicted felon or crazy. There are no storage regulations and no restrictions on ammunition sales. There is no one-gun-a-month rule and .50 cal is A-OK. Fully-automatic weapons are regulated by the Feds and Indiana law essentially says if it is okay with Uncle Sam, it's okay with them. Oh, you cannot hunt Indiana game (deer are the biggest thing here AFAIK) with some of the higher-powered rifles; but you may own and shoot such rifles.

Try driving across the border to Illinois with your Indiana carry permit and a .22 on your belt and you'll end up in jail. State laws in the US vary widely.
