what are the differences in Mossburg pumps?

Here's a link to Mossberg's site:
http://www.mossberg.com/

All of these Mossberg shotguns are based on the same basic cast aluminum receiver design.
Most receiver and trigger parts are interchangeable, and except for the 590-A1, all use plastic trigger groups and safety switches.

The 500 is their "standard" gun.
It's chambered for the 3" Magnum shells and is available in a wide variety of sporting and defense configurations.

The 505 is a youth version of the 500. It's available only in 20 gauge and .410. It's got a short stock and shorter barrels to fit children and smaller people.

The 535 is Mossberg's "Super Magnum" model, chambered for the 3 1/2" Magnum shells.

The 590 series is Mossberg's premium Police and Military gun.
These are beefed-up guns with heavier barrels, and a barrel mounting system that's like Remington's 870 shotgun.
The 590-A1 is an even heavier-duty version with a metal trigger group, metal safety switch, and other features to make the gun strong enough for use by police agencies and for government sales to the military.

Flaman,
The 590 A1 has a heavier barrel, ghost ring sights, and bayonet lug as well.
Mossberg part number is 51663. I'm getting one soon and from what I've seen the price of the A1 is not much more than a typical 590.

I just wish they would make a heat shield that fits over the heavy barrel and works with ghost rings. Some folks have done their own custom adaptations of this.

Hi. I have a friend that has an FFL. It will cost around $380. My local gunshop, by comparison, is selling it for $440. Looking at other folks' posts, the going rate seems to be around $400 to $450 retail.

Don't mean to derail your thread, but...

How are the Maverick shotguns different? Those are made by Mossberg too, right?

I just purchased a Mossberg 500A 12ga with the kit for changing to a pistol grip for $300.

And it isn't "according to the book" by any means. Book says I should have 5+1 (2 3/4 shells) but when I shook the dowel out, I was able to load 8+1

It definitely is a 500, not a 590. The barrel mounts by screwing it into the magazine.

I like the 500A way more than the 590. IT just shoots better and feels smoother.

Would the 590 make a good multipurpose shotgun in 12 ga. 3"? Get a rifled barrel for slugs, a long full choke for geese or turkey, a shorter/wider choke for pheasant and for practice on a trap/skeet range? I'm not much concerned about home defense.

Not sure on the barrels...

BrianBM,
I'm not sure on replacement full choke barrels for the 590. It's my understanding that the 590 only has two cylinder bore barrels available--18.5" and 20".

I'll defer to our shotgun experts on this one and ask "Can other 500A barrels be used on the 590?"

Thanks to all who have the answer to this one!

The 500A does have a smoother pump action but lacks as many rounds and has plastic in a lot of places where teh 590A1 has metal and is beefy and solid. The 500A is great for skeet and such, the 590A1 is designed to withstand anything the Marines throw at it. I have to admit the pump is rather odd but it just takes some getting used to.
