I just picked up a Remington 870 Express pump shotgun that has a 20" Hastings rifled slug barrel on it (made in France?) and was wondering what are the best slugs out there for penetration and expantion. Looking to make this my "tactical slug gun". What are your experiences and suggestions. What is the furthest range that you would use such a firearm? Where can I get a different forearm and stock? Websites if you will......;)

Winchester's Supreme line has a .45 cal, 1 oz (400 grs or so) saboted slug rated at ~2000 fps. Saw write-up on it a while back & author was getting terrific groups at 100 yds & energies + trajectory out to 150 yds was very impressive.

FWIW, I tried some with an 870 rifled choke tube & they tumbled - likely not enough stabilization (duh ;) ) Never tried personally w/full rifled barrel.

Looked to worth a box or two to at least evaluate.

I always forget to check that!

The archives are definitely a hidden treasure chest. I'm glad that they didn't loose them during the "violation" of our beloved site. Thanks Rich!

Take your gun and a bunch of different loads and experiment. Don't forget your white lab coat!

[Mrs. Ray] "What's this doing here?"
[Mr. Ray] "It's my lab coat."
[Mrs. Ray} "For what?"
[Mr. Ray] "I'm doing some scientific experiments and some guy on the Internet told me to buy one."

Federal Barnes Expanders

I have an 870 Wingmaster with a 24-inch Hastings barrel with the cantilever scope mount. The scope is 1.75 to 5x.

I have had great luck with 2 3/4 Federal Barnes Expanders. They are a copper slug in a plastic sabot that rips open when expanding. I have taken three large bucks with these. None have gone more than 15 yards.

At 50 yards I can put slugs in the center all in one hole. I can't do it for long as recoil takes its toll.

The Winchester Supreme wasp-waisted sabot slugs are very, very accurate as well. However, I shot a doe through the chest with one and had almost no expansion. One little hole in and one slightly larger hole out on the other side. However, I did make a nice off-hand shot in the back of her head at 60 yards down a ravine as she walked away.

A while back, Remington Copper Solids were bad on Hastings barrels for some reason. I used a few of them until a warning came out. I don't think my barrel was damaged.

Hornaday makes an XTP slug in an orange box that is quite nice.

Stick to 2 3/4 slugs. 3-inch mags only hit the shoulder harder. There are a few new ones out there that are a big pistol bullet in a sabot that seem to shoot really flat.

Deer beware when a hunter has a rifled slug barrel and the right slugs for the gun.

Bye

Best slugs

lightfield are the best in most guns.As stated try different ones to see what the gun likes.Good Luck

ALL 12 gauge slugs are good on deer sized game. A coupla things....

The spindle type sabot slugs are oft wonderously accurate. However, like one respondent here stated, they oft left longer blood trials and had smaller entry and exit wounds. And, w/o exception they seem to need a fully rifled bbl.

3" mag slugs do two things 2 3/4" slugs do not. They build a flinch fasterthanheck and go through your money PDQ.
