What are Cop Killer bullets?

(Re: Cheney's voting record.) Is there any such thing? I thought the term referred to Teflon coating or similar that would penetrate Kevlar. Were such bullets ever produced, and why? Who could/can buy them? I can understand the military application, but what civilian use other than LE needing to nail a perp in a vest?

It’s a phrase the media used to stir things up. Any bullet can kill but when you get on the tube and say KILLER BULLETS the sheeple run for cover.

Never mind. After I posted my questions, I went to the NRA ILA website. Should have gone there first, all questions answered. The two articles from National Review on the cop killer bullet and plastic gun scams are really good.

FUD...I used to hunt gators in Florida with some N.A.'s...we'd drop off a tree limb and use a metal rod thru the eye to kill them...can't sell the skulls with a bullet hole. Also used .22's...but these weren't 'attack, run for your life' scenarios.

One thing you might know-if you have to run from a chargeing gator...zig-zag...like you are running around the corner of a building.

You did the best you could with what you had and there is nothing having a different bullet or handgun would do for you that you didn't do anyway. :)

As far as the bullets...goes along the lines of a plastic gun. Maybe we should find who manufactures the depleted uranium bullets and get them to make for small arms? ;)

The real so called cop killer bullets were developed by KTW FOR POLICE USE where greater penetration was needed. NBC learned that they would penetrate a Threat Level One soft body armor vest and christened them "cop killer" bullets.
At that time there were a number of conventional bullets on the market with equal penetration against soft body armor. It was a case of anti-gun media spin and hype.

An interesting bit of trivia there: apparently the critters didn't realize that the police were wearing body armour until after NBC's breathless report.

Thanks for nothing, NBC.
