What ammo to buy for a new Mossberg 590

I'd like to take it out and do some practice shooting without knocking myself out. Can it shoot standard/light loads like 12ga. 1 1/8oz?

I want to try out both the shoulder stock and pistol grip but don't need to be firing 2 oz slugs through it just for practice :D

I just want to make sure I don't harm the gun in the process though with bad/light loads. Thanks for any advice.

Go to one of the "Marts" and get the cheapest loads you can find. Pumps don't care about shell power levels.

If your going to use it for HD, you'll want to pattern it at your max possible engagement distance plus a yard. This will tell you what your POI and shot spread will be.

Heheheh I forgot about it being a pump and not having to worry about ejecting the load... I just bought a Remington 1100 auto too so I was thinking that route (for ejection/etc).

Well cool, I'll probably just buy the same loads 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz target loads for now.

Thank you!

Get small amounts of a variety of loads and brands. See what your gun likes. Spread and point of impact.

Pattern board can be very enlightening.

Generic light loads, as cheap as possible are the best breakin ammo, IMO. After a few hundred rounds, then go for what shoots best for a particular mission.

I'd go for 1 oz loads. These usually cost less, kick less and do the job on clays or close range practical targets.

I've run over a doxen 25s at trap with them in the last year, and find them no handicap when shooting 16s.

Yeah, I definitely want to give the pattern board a try with both guns and see how it goes.

I noticed all types of loads but I've only shot trap with 1 1/8.... but didn't think about 1 oz loads... I only saw 7/8 and I didn't want to go that low.

Quick question, what is the DR. EQ rating on shells? The ones I bought are DR. EQ 2 3/4 but some said 3, one box said Handicap or something.

Also is 7 1/2 shot the most commonly used?

Thanks again!

Also, is it even reasonable to try and hit trap from the 16 with the little mossberg 590? No chokes/tubes or anything, just the regular gun?

I think it'll be ok for throwing clays right there on the line with a friend, but at the trap range, even at 16 yard line, it probably wouldn't be effective, would it? I was just hoping to maybe get some more use out of it besides home defense and target practice.

If you want to post 100 straights and be a local legend, the 590 is not the best choice. If you want to become a better shotgunner, use your 590 for trap, skeet, Sporting, barn pigeons, etc. A cylinder bore works well up to 25-30 yards.

Dram Equivalent is a hangover from days of old when black powder was the standard propellant. A 3 dram load is one going as fast as one with 3 drams of BP behind it.

Lose that Pistol grip for any "Serious" work.
