What about the Smith model 25 .45 Colt?

Hey, all -

Since I have been a "good hubbie" and not bought a gun for six months, I have decided to reward myself with a Smith & Wesson model 25 in .45 Colt for Christmas. I know that the .45 Colt is a round to reckon with; my question is:

Does anyone use a relover in this caliber for home/self defense purposes?

Thanks! ;)

Carried my 25-5 in .45 Colt on duty several years ago & only quit because I was forced to go to a Glock 9mm. I felt very comfortable with that gun, still have it, it still gets outdoors with me on occasion & still makes me feel very comfortable with it. I also have a pre-MIM pre-lock stainless 625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt and this year's blued 25 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. The blued gun will soon be getting surgery to replace the MIM hammer, trigger, and firing pin, and to remove the lock parts.
I like all three, and would use any of them for home defense if I didn't have the Colt 1911 already ready already on the nightstand.
With the right load, the .45 Colt is a very effective defensive caliber.
Merry Christmas.

I like the M25 in 45 Long Colt. The 45 Long Colt is a good cartridge that simply gets better with age. I have looked at the 325 and 625 S&Ws lately. The M25 has it all over both of them. I do suggest a 5" barrel on the M25. That just has the right look.

Oh, fiddle! You don't either like the 25-5, it's not old enough or small enough for you!
Woof!

I had a 4" Model 25 that I bought from an estate sale in the early 90's. I think that it had been a holster gun, as it had some finish wear, and was pretty loose. I sent it back to S&W, and they totally rebuilt and refinished it. It was an absolute thing of beauty when I got it back. I handload, and I was afraid to push it too hard, though...I ended up selling it in order to buy 2 .45 Colt Blackhawks. The 25 is a great gun with light to moderate loads, but is not one for hotrodding, so I understand.

Ive thought about getting a Smith M25-5 many times myself, and its an excellent piece and fine for HD. But I ended up going with the M629 Trailboss because the frame size was the same and the .44 special round and the .45 colt round are about equal (I dont have the specs with me), and last but not least I have the option of magnum level power if desired. Which is not to say that you made anything less than a great choice, its just a matter of personal preference :)

I carried mine in a Judge plain leather thumbbreak holster Denis. A great holster, a great calber and a great revolver. I really appreciated the "click" when the cylnder latched into the frame. The only other revolver I own that does the same "click" is my M65.

Absolutely. My 625-9 .45 Colt Mountain Gun is a TERRIFIC revolver in every relevant characteristic – and it is a very fine defensive weapon (I carry it concealed in a DeSantis, strong side/high rise). Loaded with rounds like Georgia Arms’ 200 grain Gold Dots, that deliver 1200 FPS performance, and I feel extremely confident – if I place shots accurately, the 625-9 and Gold Dots will defeat any adversary – in my defense: at home, in a vehicle, while carrying concealed, in the field; there are NO exceptions.

I bought the 25-13 this summer wearing the conversion cocobolo grips and like it. I plan on getting service round-butted old style grips for concealed carry. The gun is a beautiful shooter, very accurate but I don't like the thin barrel and if I had it to do over again I believe I would have gotten the 629 4-incher at 41 1/2 ounces. The 25-13 is 39 1/2. Like many of us, I am just never satisfied.

I have carried a 25-5 6 inch for years. I had my gunsmith make and fit, a spare cylinder in .45 ACP. Most of the time, I prefer the .45 auto cylinder for CCW, as it reloads so quickly with the full moon clips

25-5's are some dandy guns.

The S@W M-25 is a good choice indeed. 4" or 6" is the question. Either way remember it was designed for standard 45 colt loadings and not high pressure ammo in any form. Winchester does make a silvertip hollowpoint load for this that will work fine in this revolver for defense at home. This load is within SAAMI specifications for the .45 long colt.
