What about the M14 for Long Range shooting?

Hey all,
I am wondering why I hardly ever see anyone talking about using a Springfield M1A for long range shooting. I know they are not as accurate as a bolt gun but they look like they would be a whole lot more fun to shoot. I Know that I would love to have one.
Could the reason be that to get the accuracy that shooters demand you would have to spend a great deal of money? I know to get a good one from SA it would cost about 2500 bucks.

Just Wondering.

You got it. It costs a lot more to get the M1A accurate than a bolt action. Even so, a lot of people have 1 MOA M1As.

Yes the M1ASM is 2500$, or the M1ANM is about $2200 but once you bench it out at 300 to 600 yds, you will never regret either purchase.

I have noted an interesting observation though. The barrel twist is different between the NM and SM. My NM is really good out to about 300 yds, and routinely does better then the SM with both the Palma Seirra bullet, but is about the same with the 168 matchking. At about 300 yds, my SM becomes more accurate with the 168 and the palma's seem a bit worse.

Probably just the difference in the barrels, but I always wondered about the twists.

Either way, get an SM or an NM and go to a long range. What a blast, particularly during hunting season when you get the guys out there with the super magnums which they only shoot about 10 shots a year out of. Putting 20 rnds out of an autoloader in a pattern 1/2 the size of their 3 round "group" is very enjoyable.

M1A .......LR

Nala, the M1A, is good to around 600-700 yards CONSISTENTLY.......
Without damaging the rifle............
You CAN shoot them to 1k, but it is VERY hard on the rifle as the increased velocities needed will batter your op rod, and reciever all to hades after a while.
You will need 2 front sights, to do this........one for 600 in, and one from 600 out..............
The problem is the 22" barrel and the gas operation parts........
Designated loads for the 1A, are 2550 fps........to get to 1K, and do WELL, you will have to run them at around 2800..........this added velocity will be detrimental quiclky to your piece.........
The reason for the front sites, is the rear sight, will have to be SO high to reach the 1k mark, it will wobble, and or worse.........not be stable at best.........this along with your chin weld..........you will look like an ostrich........NOT conducive to good shooting.
fwiw..........and now in "incoming mode".
