What about the .444?

My friend is getting a .444 Winchester lever action for Christmas. What do you think about it? He doesn't hunt, just like to shoot.

What about the 444?

Anthony,

The 444 Marlin is a great catridge. I recently purchased a Winchester Big Bore in 444 and took my first buck with it last month. For deer, it's great. It should work just as well on bear or elk or moose.

However, if all your friend wants to do with his rifle is shoot at the range, thee are other calibers that would be more fun in a lever action. The 30-30 would be a lot easier on the shoulder and cheaper to buy cartridges for. The pistol calibers such as the 44 mag, 45 Cold and the .357 are a real hoot! They're fun to shoot and the ammo won't break the budget at all.

To be honest, I have a 44 mag, 45 Colt and a 30-30, all of which I reload for and shoot a lot. The 444, while now my favorite deer rifle, is not too much fun to shoot at the bench. The recoil is heavy and the rounds are expensive.

Just my $.02

The .444 Marlin is a fine cartridge. You can really make it hum with handloads (300 grain bullet at 2200 fps) or you can use some Allient 2400 powder with a 240 grain cast bullet duplicating .44 Magnum handgun performance. Mine is extremly accurate for a lever action rifle. It is also a very nice companion to the .44 Mag revolver since you use the same bullets for each; just differenct cases.

444 Marlin and Paco Kelly

Gents,

You might check out Paco Kelly (http://www.sixgunner.com/paco/Default.htm). He's a dedicated lever-rifle man. He's got an article or two on the 444 Marlin which he likes very much. You'll probably have to go to the site archive to fine it.

Anthony,

The 444 is a fine round. I don't have a rifle chambered for it but have a TC Contender. Started out as a 44 Mag. had it rechambered in 444 Marlin. For a handgun it will reach out to 200 yards and is accurate when rested at that distance. Isn't a fun gun to shoot after 20 rounds you hand is hurting.
