WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK
PUBLIC HEARING ON TRIGGER LOCKS ON APRIL 26
As you know, there are several bad bills in the Westchester County Legislature. Provisions of these bills include the following:
1) All guns owners must use trigger locks on all their guns (rifles, shotguns, and handguns) at all times. No other forms of storage (safes, cable locks, etc.) are acceptable. This will force you to lock up the very guns you bought for self-defense.
2) Requires gun owners to store their firearms and ammunition separately.
3) Prohibits the sale of firearms between private parties without a trigger lock.
4) Imposes a Class A misdemeanor for violations that result in physical injury where a trigger lock was not installed.
5) Registration of all gun owners and all guns, including rifles, shotguns, and handguns.
The sad fact remains that there are 9 Democrats and only 8 Republicans on the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Therefore, these bills have a good chance of passing if gun owners don't make an immediate, dramatic, and large-scale response.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE HAVE OUR CHANCE! Just this week, the Board voted to hold a public hearing on April 26, 2000. According to the Board's Chairman, George Latimer (D), over 100 speakers are anticipated.
Details are as follows:
Date: Wednesday, April 26, 2000
Time: 4:00pm to 9:00pm (or until the final speaker is heard)
Location: The Westchester County Center, White Plains, NY - 914-285-4050
Room: The "Little Theater"
Speakers: Speaker cards will be given out starting at 3:00pm on a first-come, first-served basis.
Speakers are also invited to submit written comments for inclusion in the public record. Mail them to:
Ms. Pat Gorski, Clerk
Westchester County Board of Legislators
148 Martine Avenue
8th Floor
White Plains, NY 10601
According to Legislator and Chairman Latimer, "After the public hearing, the proposed legislation will be referred back into the Legislation Committee for a full review of the public comments, and any alterations, or deletions that may follow. No final vote on the issue will occur until a second public hearing is held, later this spring."
PLEASE ATTEND THIS HEARING! It doesn't matter if you're a Westchester County resident. We need to make our voices heard. And remember, NYC and Westchester are the testing grounds for gun control legislation in the rest of New York State. Even if you don't make a speech, be there to support pro-Second Amendment speakers with your applause.
We should also consider holding a LARGE protest outside the Center. Comments are welcome.
In the mean time, continue to contact the Board. Even if you're not a Westchester resident, your calls and letters will help.
