local shooting place
You are in luck. Near you is the Washtenaw Sportsman club off Ellis road near the intersection of US 94 and Michigan Ave. They have an excellent youth program to help young shooters get up to speed in both rifle and pistol. Right now until memorial day they are shooting air guns inside out of the rain and yuck. There are a number of NRA trained youth coaches, you will be shooting high end air rifles that can put 5 pellets in one hole if you can do it. There is also excellent high end air pistols to begin to learn that side of shooting. They shoot on Saturdays I believe they start at 11am and go until 1.
Once the weather warms up they move to the outdoor range and start shooting 22 rifles and pistols. Again, lots of coaches and good courses of fire to help teach you to shoot from prone, sitting, kneeling and offhand positions to help make you an all around shooter.
You do not have to be a member to shoot or get lessons. I am not positive of the costs, normally for the 22 session it is like 7 dollars which includes ammo, rifle/pistol, targets, eye and ear protection.
As for competition matches..check with the NRA web site for local matches. I think Wayne Western Gun club holds 22 bullseye. We at Washtenaw have 22 SILHOUETTE matches about once a month, the next one will be April 15 which is 22 rifles only. Show up about 9am to get set up..check out the Washtenaw Sportsman Club web site and you will find more information.
