Went to the 300 yard range

Shot a 3 shot 1.5" group with factory ammo. Not bad for an unbedded Savage LE model with factory ammo. We had a gusting 6 - 12mph wind at our 1 - 2:30, which made it a bit tough. I think I could have done better too. This was just me taking the last 3 shots of the day for fun.

I also fired the AR there too. With only a 4x scope, I had trouble shooting under 6". My last 5 with that went into 5", I think. Not too bad for a 17" AR.

That's good shooting for a factory rifle!

Wind isn't the group destroyer that most folks think. If shots are fired quickly, before wind conditions change, groups aren't much different than when there are relatively calm winds, even if the group is deflected from target center.

Mirage and water vapor can destroy tight grouping more than rather consistent wind because the subtle changes can be difficult to assess. Group size expectations can be dashed, sending shooters back to the drawing boards with rifle and load changes, when it's the unseen conditions caused the problems.

To test loads, I look for cloudy days with a little wind and no visible mirage or water vapor (cool, dry conditions). (Water vapor is the worst condition because it's invisible. Mirage can be detected with high-powered scopes.)

Water vapor is humidity. It does change your velocity a tad BUT it does change while shooting a "string" unless you have some weird weather conditions that would put you in a storm shelter instead of the firing line.

You never have a steady wind. You might have a X mph wind, but as you shoot you'll get X -1 or X +1 mph wind. Like wind varying between 12-15 MPH.

I agree calm or no wind is difficult, I've been shooting high power and long range for 35 years and I never saw a "no wind" day. You'll always find something out there even if you can't see it, that is where mirage comes in . You pick up a 1-2 mph wind, and you can catch a boil, something you may not see watching a range flag.

Also wind at your location (firing point) may or may not have any correlation with the wind at your target or the wind mid range to your target.

Some one said that Savage has not forgotten that its the barrel that is the heart of the gun!

Downright edifying to get that confimred once again.
