Well, THAT was fun...

Eighteen rounds of 300 H&H from the bench. First try with newly built rifle. Not real encouraging. Got one 1" group and rest were bigger and this was only 25 yards. I used to be able to shoot 20 rounds of 375 H&H without too much discomfort but I think I'm getting wimpier as I get older.

Excuses: My eyes are just as old as the rest of me (turned 60 yesterday ...shudder...) so iron sights are not my friend. Cold and blustery and I didn't bring a jacket so I was cold and wind was blowing while shooting.

Also, rounds won't feed from magazine. May be a simple issue of cartridges being a hair too long. Might need to seat the bullets a little deeper.

Seems like some days the Gun Gods just can't resist handing you lemons.

I usually figure that after a day like that I'm due for a really nice day in the future. And a bad day at the range is still better than...(whatever you want to put in the space.)

Agree with Dale--some days it just doesn't work too well. And a new gun is always a mystery till you get a few rounds through it. I bet it works better as time goes on, Saxon.

Recoil does begin to wear a guy down as the years go by. I just traded my 270 for a 243. Haven't shot it yet, but if it is nominally good (1.5" at 100 yds) I will be as happy as a clam at high tide. Pronghorns and mule deer are all I will ever hunt from now on.

375 H&H is a lot more than I would care to shoot more than a couple times.

300 H&H

The worst I've ever been hurt by recoil was with 300H&H, M-70 Win. I was
sighting in off sand bags. Had just got rifle and put 8x scope on it. Was planning
to use it on bear. For several years I would see bear from same spot on a clift
The jack pine was so thick a long shot of 500 to 600yds was needed. Anyway
was zeroing rifle with a stiff 180gr load. I was comfortable, then my left hand
ended up under the pistol grip. When I touched it off it mashed my hand. Felt
like a sledge hit it. Never got that "rush" out of my 375 Sako or 98 in 458.
PS, once I got equipped for that bear shot, never saw one from there again.

You sure you can chalk it up to "shooter error"?
Could certainly be recoil related, but if you typically shoot better I'd be looking at the typical "hardware" possibilities like bedding/inletting and action screw torque.

Pics??

Happy Birthday SP.
Look at it this way: You were so excited about the BDay, try it again in a week or two.
