Well, I did it.

I bought my first handgun this past weekend. Based on advice I received here and elsewhere, I have up on the little Taurus .38 special, and opted instead for a Ruger GP100, with a 4.2" barrel. Before I bought, I shot a GP100 with the 4.2 and also with a 6". I liked this one better. I also applied for my carry permit (just to make my life easier- I don't intend to carry at this point) and found a mentor to shoot with as soon as the range isn't buried in 3' of snow. Next up, a safety class...

Thanks for your advice!

later on in your journey, pick up a snubbie.

You did it

Congratulations on your purchase. Go with a knowledgeable friend to the range and practice on stance, grip, breathing, aim and "follow through" (NRA) at up to 10 yards. Practice makes better groupings.

The GP-100 is a very good revolver. Good luck with it. After you shoot a bit, you'll probably want a snubbie for carry if you decide to carry. But you made a good start.

Congrats on the gun, im happy to hear your getting a permit. Never hurts to have another smart gun owner out there!

Great gun, built like a tank. Should last 10 lifetimes!

As suggested for your next handgun, consider a snubbie. Ruger LCR might be a good option.

You may want to check out altamontco.com for grips or grip inserts if you want to dress it up a bit. I just ordered panels for my SP101.

Congratulations! Wise move applying for carry BEFORE you actually need it, and for taking the responsibility of signing up for a safety class.
