It's never them, it's the system.http://www.newsday.com/ap/text/national/ap877.htm How about all the citizens who go through life without ever seeing a prison from the outside, much less the inside. They go about their business never bothering anybody. It is the ones who break the law who cry foul. I was raised poorly, nobody liked me I'm a victim too garbage. Well there are several who aren't too fond of me but I don't go balistic. Like the Eastwood movies, Hang Em, Hang Em high. :D

"''They're giving kids so much time that they will never get to see light again,'' said Donald Newbury, who is serving a 99-year sentence for aggravated robbery. ''Their life is gone. Now all they are is a roach in a cage. Things have to be changed. There has to be more rehabilitation in the system down there.'' "

Yah, I made mistakes as a kid too. Everyone does, but none of mine involved aggravated robbery! I am still paying for many of my high school day errors. My mistakes all started when I found out what credit was ;)
I doubt the credit agencies will buy the excuse that it was a bad childhood that caused all my debts, so they should just mark all my accounts as paid because it wasn't my fault I bought that car and that computer right before my company decided to lay everyone off... Nobody taught me how to manage money so why should I be responsible?

Not a valid excuse, period. My actions = My responsibility.

I agree, Mike.

I generally agree with the above sentiments

However, I divide violent and non-violent offenders. Are we doing "Justice" when we sentence some ding-a-ling, low life, sneak theif to 25 to life for stealing a bike? (actually happened in CA under 3-strikes)

Is this a wise use of taxpayer dollars? I'd rather stick the 3-time convicted armed robber or rapist in jail for life myself.

I agree with that too Payette Jack. How many are there locked up for way to much time on a 3rd strike pot charge? Of all the illigal drugs out there pot is the least of our worries.
Now I understand how cops feel about someone pumped up on PCP running at them with a knife even after a few bullets have been lodged in, but pot smokers?
Unless we are worried about a shortage of junk foods there is really not much to worry about. They are a waist of valuble jail space in my opinion.
My post was specificaly to violent criminals. People who are a threat to others.

You don't have enough info to make a determination on the 3 strikes cases which you mention. The first could have been rape, the second vehicular manslaughter or armed robbery, then the pot possession charge. Could have got 15 for the rape and served 5, then 15 to life and served 10. Could be 33 years old and spent 15 of the last 16 in prison. I don't care if they lock him away for spitting on the sidewalk he never should have been let out after the first or second offense, let alone get to go for three.

I'm not sure about Payette, but I mean all non violent criminals. Not those that raped, murdered and beat some old man senseless then just happened to get cornered on a drug charge. There are a lot of people behind bars that never hurt anyone but themselves, and IMHO they should not be there.
But you are right Jeff, we must always look for the whole story, not just the part that helps our views. :)

The problem is that no simple policy, like Three Strikes, is ever going to be a good substitute for human judgement. We have suffered through half a century of a takeover of the Bench in this country by the Left. I don't think most Americans yet realize how critical the role of Judges is to our judicial system. Decades of liberal judges, unwilling to provide the punishment which is the sole purpose of the justice system, have led us to Three Strikes. It's a blind policy, and in indiviual cases often stupid, but it's what were left with, since the Judges have abdicated their responsibilities.

Tank Girl,

If you find a desperate enough ambulance chaser, (aka, a lawyer), you could probably find a way to be rid of that credit debt.

Blame it on child abuse, toxic fumes near your home, hot coffee spilled in your lap or the fact that they did'nt tell you that you had to pay it back, with interest no less. :D

Join CACM! (coalition against the credit madness)!

Three strikes is just another term for zero tolerance. There are no decisions to be made. You know the old "I hate to do this but it's the law" routine. But then again if the perp is around for three times what else are we going to do with them other than kill them. They have shown that they aren't going to change.

Donald Newbury did have a point in his on-air harangue. Texas has, for many years, been the laughing stock of the nation for their over-the-top sentencing guidelines. A daytime burglary (6AM-6PM) nets you six months. A nightime burglary will get you 99 years. One marijuana cigarette? Two years.

Several years ago they gave a guy something like three-thousand years in prison which garnered a hoot from the media.

The result of these sentences is the warehousing of hopeless men in a hopeless situation in a hopeless place. If there is no rehab -- if there is no hope -- if there is no future -- if there is no reward for remorse or mending your ways -- what's left?
