My custom Mexican Mauser arrived a couple weeks ago and yesterday I got out to the range with it. Shot a couple groups at 25 yards to make sure the sights were close then tried a couple at 50. I didn't have the courage to shoot at 100 yards. Truth is I have a real hard time seeing the target at much beyond 50 since my eyes are just as old as the rest of me.
Anyway, put up a 1/2" group at 25 and 1.5" at 50. This was using some nasty military surplus ammo I bought a few years ago. Dated 1970 it uses a 139 FMJ P/BT that clocks 2925 FPS from a 24" barrel (that's why I call it nasty). It is amazingly consistent with less than 5 FPS variation. No doubt I lost a little velocity in the Mexi's 20" tube and the report was intense. Still tinkering with the sights between strings.
I need to shoot it some more, and maybe it would prefer a heavier bullet. I will eventually give it a try at 100 when I work up the courage.
The rifle:
The 25 yard group:
The 50 yard group: (This looks bigger than 1.5" but I measured it three times. Optical illusion or something.)
