Wedding present update: Bought a Model 28!

Okay. As I said in another thread, I wanted to get a friend of mine a good .357 revolver to go wither her .357 Winchester Trapper. She's getting married and that's a big enough occasion to justify buying a firearm for an old friend.

Anyhoo, today I put a hundred dollars down on a used, but in very good condition Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman. Guy at the store (whom I trust, I'm a long time customer) said the gun is in really great shape, and my inspection of the piece backed that up. Tight lock up, great trigger.

The weapon has a 4", not-quite-full underlug barrel and a wood grip. It might be a bit on the heavy side for her, but then, she didn't mind the weight of my 2.5lb CZ-97, so I don't think it'll be an issue.

The best part is the price: $250.00.

She's gonna love it! :D

Operation of a revolver is simple, I know. However, she's completely new to handguns, and I've never had a revolver before either (and am a handgun novice myself).

If any experienced S&W owners could give some tips on basic maintenance, cleaning procedures, shooting technique, I'd apreciate it.

I've heard of father- in- laws with shotguns at weddings but never a bride with a .357. Womyns lib taken to the next level I guess. :)

Oh, I just noticed....Michigan huh....never mind.

Michigan Legal

Oh, it's all legal. What I'm gonna do is pay the shop for the weapon. Then, when it comes to gift giving time, I'll take her to the police dept., have her get a permit to purchase, and then take her to the shop and pick it up in her name.

Around here $250 is just the starting point for .357s in good condition. If you got a S&W M28 for that you did good.

I'm not getting married anytime soon, but how can I go about becoming your friend?:D

Seriously, I'm sure she'll like it. If not, well I'm not sure I'd want to be friends with someone who wouldn't appreciate that gift :). Ok seriously again (really, I don't know where this mood came from), if she doesn't like it you probably got a good deal, and from the sounds of it you got a good gun so have her trade it back to you for another gun of her choice.

Regarding maintenance. There ain't any. Just scrub the barrel and chambers, take a toothbrush to everthing else you can reach, and leave it alone. DON'T TRY TO FIELD STRIP IT. You'll only cause yourself trouble. Us revo fans jes' hate to see boogered-up (Southern for "mangled") screw-heads. Accept the fact that the front of the cylinder is gonna look scorched.

On one hand, the M28 is a lotta handgun for anyone, weight-wise, so it may take a little muscle toning to allow her to shoot it for any period of time, but OTOH, the weight just soaks up recoil, so practicing w/ .38's should be pleasant. You might keep an eye on how the grips fit her. If it has the target grips, big walnut checkered ones that extend the grip frame a good half-inch, you might try to find Magna grips, which would accomodate smaller hands.

You done good, amigo. You should be proud of yourself, and the fact you have an amiga of whom you think enough to present such a gift to.

Guns as gifts

Well, this has been a prosperous year for me. I've had plenty of money, most of the time, which I should've been saving, I know, but what the hell. Times like this my generous side comes out.

Dang near bought a FEG Hi-Power for another friend of mine. It was gone before I could put any money on it, though.

I figure, everybody needs a good gun. And my giving guns to my friends is me helping them reaffirm and exercise their Constitutional rights! It's like signing somebody up to vote, except more fun! :)

Picked it up today....

$288 got me the Model 28 .357, a box of .38 Special, and a nice soft case. I won't be able to deliver the present soon, as I leave for annual training on Saturday and wont' be back until the 17th.

I'm happy, though. I think I got a GREAT deal, and it's the kind of gift that keeps on giving. I don't suspect that she'll shoot enough to wear out an N-Frame .357....

Something changed...?
Thought you had to drag her through the permit/pick up procedure...?
