Served as Best Man at my friend's wedding today. Yesterday at the Rehearsal dinner, as a token of our 20+ years of friendship, he presented me with a blued Ruger Old Army. That was a surprise. In exchange, I gave him his gift (not a wedding gift as I didn't a handcrafted Haines pattern Pennsylvannia want it to be community property) which was Flintlock Longrifle (42" bbl, curly maple stock, wood patchbox and gleaming brass hardware). The rifle took my uncle and I over 100 hours to assemble from a kit purchased from Golden Age Arms. Everyone was struck by the beauty of the wood (hand rubbed with over 12 coats of Briwax, finished with Tung oil) and the gleaming brass. The lock was polished to a high gloss white and left natural. When I picked him up to take him to the church this morning, I also presented him with a powder horn, 1 lb. of Goex FF blackpowder and 3 flints. Scrambled out of the house and couldn't dig up the balls & patches but that can come later.
The bride won't be so impressed with their wedding gift. You see, I gave them a box of canned food - and all the labels have been removed. What good is marriage with some mystery and fun?
