Wedding gifts

Served as Best Man at my friend's wedding today. Yesterday at the Rehearsal dinner, as a token of our 20+ years of friendship, he presented me with a blued Ruger Old Army. That was a surprise. In exchange, I gave him his gift (not a wedding gift as I didn't a handcrafted Haines pattern Pennsylvannia want it to be community property) which was Flintlock Longrifle (42" bbl, curly maple stock, wood patchbox and gleaming brass hardware). The rifle took my uncle and I over 100 hours to assemble from a kit purchased from Golden Age Arms. Everyone was struck by the beauty of the wood (hand rubbed with over 12 coats of Briwax, finished with Tung oil) and the gleaming brass. The lock was polished to a high gloss white and left natural. When I picked him up to take him to the church this morning, I also presented him with a powder horn, 1 lb. of Goex FF blackpowder and 3 flints. Scrambled out of the house and couldn't dig up the balls & patches but that can come later.

The bride won't be so impressed with their wedding gift. You see, I gave them a box of canned food - and all the labels have been removed. What good is marriage with some mystery and fun?

When one of my nieces got married a few years ago I guess it was the first time I noticed that 99% of the gifts were for the bride. Oh sure, the new hubby can use the blender and the toaster oven just as well but it struck me that there ought to be some "guy" stuff included in the haul too. From that point on I have made it a point to include things like a cordless screwdriver, set of wrenches etc in the gifts. Hey, the bride can use a wrench just as much as the groom can use potholders!

*ouch*! That is evil. I think you may be in the bride's 'libra negri' for a while. Perhaps just what you wanted. :)

The flintlock sounds like a work of art. Did your friend take it (and his new spouse) to the range right after the ceremony? Priorities, ya know. :D

Damn...that IS a great gift. Personally, I didn't bring any firearms to the ceremony, but I did make a custom bowie with carbon fiber grips for the cake. My bride ended up really liking it, which is why I love her.
