If this doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. Pass to everyone you know....

Insomniacs for Gore 2000 - Boring is Good
I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately. I worry. Pains of conscious, I suppose, driven by fear. See, I have three little kids, one still in diapers. It’s their future that makes me an insomniac.
I’ve been worrying about the upcoming November election.. There’s a lot at stake this year and it keeps me up.
It’s not just the 5-4 nature of the Supreme Court that troubles me but what that implicates: rights are hanging in the balance. One wrong decision here and we may all lose a lot more choice than we figured.
I also worry about the country my kids will inherit. Heck, I worry about the kind of world they’ll have. Holes in the ozone bigger than Australia, revived Russian nationalism, China’s repression legitimized in the name of big business, billions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% periodically. Naturally I’m walking the floors all night.
This "W" Bush guy really worries me. It’s not just that the nomination was handed to him, it’s who did the handing. There’s such a hue and cry about fifty thousand dollars from a group of Buddhist monks. I’m more concerned about the $50 million in contributions from defense contractors and big oil companies. With a trillion dollar missile defense system at stake and gas going to two bucks a gallon its no wonder I hear the clock chime in the dead of night.
This is why I’m supporting Al Gore. As an insomniac he appeals to me. Sure I worry about him, but not as much. Plus, he makes me calm. Just listen to him. Nice steady economic growth. Yep. Maintain social security. Whew. Fund education. Good. Preserve a woman’s right to choose. Nothing too big or radical or fast. Right now, boring is good.
If Gore is boring then "W" is risky: really risky. A real risk of big oil taking over the country. Cheney is an oil exec; "W" himself made millions in oil. I’m anxious about doubling mid-winter fuel bills already. Where is my Mylanta?
I also worry about "W’s" character. With Clinton we knew about Paula Jones way in advance. With this "W" it is a wiener of a different kind. His character is best exposed in his death penalty approach. Of the just over 200 American executions since 1976, he has been involved in 137. Some of them retarded. Some convicted while their lawyers slept. Some killed without being allowed to show their innocence with DNA evidence.
This death issue uniquely belongs to him and is defining. Not only does "W" participate closely in this process, he has personally approved every one and mocked, with unbelievable savageness, the clemency plea of a young woman about to die by lethal injection. Even more shocking is the fact that in July 2000, while running for President, he permitted the destruction of over fifty unprocessed DNA samples of Texas death sentence cases. If this doesn’t reveal his character, I don’t know what does.
I see this character issue also as reflected in "W’s" drug use. It’s not that over thirty of those executed under his reign were death eligible because of prior felony drug possession, its not that the evidence of "W’s" wild days is both rich and persuasive, its that a person who refuses to talk about or admit a drug problem still has a problem. This is especially so where there is an admission that he does have significant control issues with alcohol. If that obsessive/addictive abuse has been tabled without treatment, while in denial, I worry about relapse. We know stress is stress and Clinton has shown that the risk of relapse is a big deal. A six- week presidential bender keeps me tossing and turning all night.
So, I’m for Al Gore for President. In an age of imperial presidencies and concentrations of governmental power, of increasing big brother intrusions and loss of privacy, I will rest easier with someone not as likely to do as he is told by his daddy’s CIA handlers. An active-dynamic-conservative-yes boy in the White House is more than I can stand.
Insomniacs for Gore 2000. I’d rather be put to sleep than put to death. Sleep on it.
