Weaver V16 4-16x42 opinions needed

I'm considering this scope for a savage 111G, 30-06. Reason i'm looking at this is b/c i will only hunt about 5 days or so total a year with it, the rest of the time is range time. so i wanted more magnification than a 2-7x or a 3x9.

price range varys but figgure keep it under $400 (good shape used is fine too). i need a scope that will dial down low for woods shooting and crank up for when i'm at the range. i was thinking a 50mm was too cumbersome so i'm sticking with 40/42mm there.

I'm just wondering if this scope is a solid choice and if anyone personally owns it and they can chime in that would be great. also are the adjustments repeatable?

any other scopes that fit what i'm looking for 4x or lower on the low end and high zoom.

I do not own a V16 but I do own a V3, V10, and 2 V24's and I think they are fine scopes. Yes the adjustments are repeatable. They are clear with relatively good brightness. The power ring and AO move smoothly with no gritiness. Eye relief is good.

I own two V16s , one with a standard duplex , the other a target dot. Both have performed very well for me on various rimfire rifles and .223 varmint rifles.

I am a huge fan of all Weaver scopes and consider them the best bargain. Natchezss has some very good deals on the Classic V's you are looking at for $269.

Weaver Service Sucks

I hate to pee on your corn flakes but I have not had good luck with their service. I sent in A v16 for tracking. They sent it back saying it had a bad erector set. They did not fix it, call me,text me, or nada. I would atleast liked an option. Put a few bucks more and get something that somebody will stand behind.
So here is my current problem
Hi,
I was hoping someone from the board could help me with a weaver v16 scope. It stopped tracking properly so I sent it off to weaver scope repair. They just sent the darn thing back saying the erector set was broke and that they could not fix it. I tried fo find pics of an erector set to no avail. I would not mind opening it myself but one would to get some good advise before I do it. The one scope company that took over the weaver scope repair stuff was way too high to recondition the scope. I could buy a new one for that. I only paid $225 for the thing brand new in the first place. Where is is the erector set ? How do I get to it? The scope does not rattle when I shake it. The scope has served me well and I hate to just throw it away.Where can I find help?
Thanks in advance

Most good scopes are filled with nitrogen or nitrogen/argon. Opening one up is gonna let this gas escape.

Also, without some very specialized tools you are not going to be able to do anything to it.

I have 2 older V-16s , one on my Savage 10FP and one on my DPMS LR-308and have used them out to 600yds. I have no complaints. Weaver has changed hands several times. Can't say anything about the new Weavers.

BUT , you may want to check out a Burris Fullfield II. Great scope for around the same money. Plus I really like the Ballisti-Plex recticle.

yeah I don't think the company is much into servicing what they sell. That being said most of them hold up well, and they are brighter than a VXII for less money.

I can't speak for the V16, but I did have a Weaver V10. It was an Ok scope, but I replaced it with a Burris FFII in 4.5X14 and that was a definite step up in quality of optics. The V10 had what I've heard described as 'tunnel vision', in that your view in the scope had a black ring around it unlike any other scope I own - like looking out of a tunnel. Again, it was an Ok scope, and a new V10 is only about $170, so I'll say it was worth the money. I'd much rather have the Burris (which I rate about equal in optics with my Leupold VXII), but below my Leupold VariX-III's. But I have to admit that all my preferred scopes are more expensive than the Weavers.

Do you know what they ment by "could not fix it"? What I am asking is do they mean it is not fixable, no parts available, not covered damage, or what.
I pulled the paperwork on one of my Weavers and it said "fixed or replaced" sounds like they owe you a new scope.

You should pursue the claim with Weaver until you are satisfied they had met their warranty.

I am up to 6 Weavers now. I've added a V9 and another V24 to my stuff. I haven't had any problems with any of them, but I am curiuos about their customer service.
Good luck.

Can't speak to Weaver scopes, but as to higher magnification for range shooting, I have 6 BSA Contenders 8-24x50 and I use them for both hunting and target shooting. I just turn them down to 8 or 10 for hunting and they do fine for what I do with them. I feel that using high magnification on the range has helped me improve my shooting techniques a lot because at hi mag any movement is very noticeable. Helps me with my steadiness of hold and trigger control, etc. I've shot all the BSAs a lot with no problems. They are not the equal of the real high dollar scopes, but for the price they are pretty good and have proven the be durable.

If you are looking at Weaver scopes, don't overlook the Nitrex by Weaver line of scopes on closeout at Natchez. The TR1 line of scopes are re-badged Weaver Grand Slam's. Here is a TR1 4-16x50 selling for less than $180.

I have the V16 and it's a fabulouis scope save for one problem. I ordered mine online with the fine reticle, which it too fine for me. I struggle with it, but I have problem eyes with regard to light, so it may be OK for someone with good eyes. My suggestion is to not order the fine reticle. I paid about $290 at Planet Optics a few years ago. It has the AO adjustible objective. It pretty much sets in the cabinet now.
