Weaver bases?????

I recently purchased a Savage 10FP in .308. Following the advice given in a previous thread, I purchased the Tasco SS10X42 scope and Leupold QRW rings. However, all of the above are matte but Leupold only sells it's Weaver-style bases in gloss or silver. I want some steel, good-quality Weaver-style matte bases. Any suggestions? Are the Weaver brand bases as good quality as Leupold? Thanks.

Millett makes an excellent steel Weaver type base. I'm sure they have one for your Savage. If it were me I'd get a one piece base. -- Kernel

I was a bit leary about the Weaver 2 piece bases myself considering how inexpensive they were. I bit the bullet and purchased the matte 2 piece Weavers and mounted them on my Anschutz rifle. These are some seriously heavy, well made bases! I was definitely impressed. I had the same dilemna with Leupold bases and what they were manufacturing.

After getting ripped off by Conetrol on an expensive base and ring set that never showed up I bought the Weavers.

I mounted them on the Anschutz with Leupold rings and a Leupold 3x9 EFR scope. No problems with alignment at all and the installation was smooth.

I may be wrong, but the bases appeared to be brass and not steel.

BTW, these bases are really solid and the rig consistently shoots out the x ring at 50 yards off the bench. Glad I bought them now.

Sickpuppy, If they're not steel they're most probably aluminum. Weaver rings have never impressed me but their aluminum bases are okay for a .22. I've got one on a 10/22. Does Weaver make a steel base? -- Kernel

Weaver did make steel bases that were blued. I have them on about 4 rifles and in many many years I have had no problems whatsoever with them. WalMart used to have them by the tons and cheap too. I haven't looked lately but if they do have the they are worth while. Good, well made, and economical.

I can't tell the difference between the Weaver or Weaver-style mounts of today, versus "yesterday", as to strength.

I have Weaver mounts on my '06, since 1970...And used Weaver mounts on my first '06, a half-century back.

They ain't purty, but they work on my hunting rifles as good as any other mount ever made.

Weaver has introduced a line of steel bases under the name "Grand Slam". They are available from Brownells, but they come in what is referred to as "polished blue"--probably not high gloss, but rather someting between gloss and matte. (Maybe you could cajole a local gunsmith into bead-blasting and rebluing them cheap?)

Looked in the Brownell's catalog for Warne 'Maxima' bases--they are steel as well, and come in matte, but not for Savages...good luck, weegee.

P.S. Considering the design of Weaver bases, which have rather thick cross-sections, and are inherently strong, you might consider just going with aluminum. It should be plenty strong enough (or maybe you're just one of those people who--like myself--prefer steel on our guns whenever we can get it...)

weegee,
The GrandSlam bases are what I bought for my rifle and from Brownells. They are definitely a nice matte finish.

As for 2 piece versus 1 piece bases I go for 2 piece. All the accuracy types I know use a 2 piece.

Thanks, everyone for the great input! (TFL is like having a really smart big brother who I can go to for good advice!). In checking all the leads you've given me, I find that no one makes a true matte finish weaver-style base for the Savage 10FP. However, Slickpuppy's last post gives me hope that the Weaver Grandslam bases might be close enough. Thanks again!
