Weaver 4-16 scope or should I hold out for a Leupold?

My local shop has a Weaver V-16 4-16x42 A/O, Matte Finish, Dual X Reticle Low Profile Target Knobs for $329... what does the A/O mean and what does the dual x reticle mean? I think the price is a bit high, but that can probably be lowered, I would like to know your opinion(s) on this Weaver scope and Weavers in general...
thank you.

Billy,

I can answer 2 of your questions. 1st, AO means Adjustable Objective. It is used to eliminate parallax at different distances. For a a good explination go and read this thread:

2nd, the Dual X reticle is just what Weaver calls a standard duplex reticle. More info on Weaver can be found here:

As for an opinion on the Weaver, I do not have one since the only scope I own is a Leupold 4.5-14x40 AO Tactical. I absolutely love this scope and looked through/played with several others (Tasco SS, Nikon Monarch, Springfield Armory)before going ahead with it. If you are interested, there are some great deals to be found on Leupold's out there. Try these sites:

Good Luck

Weaver scopes in general are pretty good. Weaver, RCBS, and other gun-stuff are part of Blount Industries. I've been to their business/service center in Thomasville, Georgia; they have a pretty sharp bunch of folks there.

I've used both Leupold and Weaver. I've never found any notable difference in performance or durability.

As usual,

The Weaver V-16 is an excellent scope and a great value in Japanese optics. List price is kinda out of your self emposed $300 price range, but I've seen them on sale for less than $300.

Below are some more links on the pros and cons of A/O.... including some of my rants. Personally I think A/O has little benefit on rifle that's meant to be taken into the field, with the possible exception of a few specific kinds of varmint rigs.

The key thing to remember is A/O is not nescassary for long range shooting. It's for very short range shooting.... like under 50ft. That's why air rifle scopes are almost always equipped with A/O. Same goes for police tactical/scopes since the vast majority of their shots are taken at well under 100 yds. -- Kernel

HOLD OUT FOR THE LEUPOLD.

Buy American!
... plus Leupold has the best customer service and warranty of any of the optics companies.
AO is un-necessary for long range (>100yds), as Kernel said.

V16

I just bought a V16 from Natchez for $219. Great buy and scope. 1-800-251-7839 Their website has them for $239, but they are having a sale on them. A lot of scope for the money.

Just my own opinion, Hold out for the Leupold! I've never
had any problems with them and I think they have the
best product.
