Weatherby Vanguard

I was offered a chance to buy one of these from a a co-worker's brother. He is asking $400 for it and said it is .223 Rem. I've found that they were made with .270 Win as the smallest caliber. Anyways, is it a rifle that is worth it, considering performance and price? Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

weatherby vanguard are made on a special basis only to wall mart, the caliber thing you mentioned is correct although price for the weatherby vanguard is around $300.00

maybe it ain´t a vanguard (cheapest weatherby.)

keep blasting!

i dont see the reason behind buying a weatherby in a standard cal. synthetic. other than the name...
buy a CZ or a remington if you want a plastic 223.
if you want deep blue steel and fantastic wood in an awsome caliber then get a MK V.

I bought one in .270 for $377 at my local walmart about 6 mos ago. It seems to be very well made, and the factory 100yrd. test target had a 3 shot group that measured .46 from edge to edge. Weatherby makes the same accuracy guarantee on these rifles as on their $1500 mark V models.
The guarrantee: A 1.5" 5 shot group with ANY factory ammo.
I think they are a good deal. YMMV go to walmart and handle one nect to a win model 70, a remmington ADL, or a savage 110 fp.

The one I bought has an excellent 4.5lb trigger out of the box.

If you do a search on the web you will find a custom smith who swears by these and builds a custom rifle on one.

for 350 I could add a Mcmillian stock if I ever feel the need.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it. The rifle also has a Tasco scope with it...so for $400, it's not a bad deal at all.

Last night I went out to the outdoor range which is really set up for handgun (NRA 300, 2700 bullseye) and I shot my weatherby at 50 yards to zero the scope, Bushnell trophy 3x9 mounted on leupold dovetail rings and a two piece mount, I used winchester hunting ammo and I shot it offhand, kneeling, and leaning against a post(simulated tree). I fired 40 rounds of winchester power point .270 150grain, these are full power hunting rounds. I fired without a rest or bench because I wanted to approximate the way you would hunt with the rifle.

it took me 10 rounds to figure out where it was hitting on the target 10 rounds to zero it, and the next 20 rounds helped me establish a good flinch!!!!!

This morning I have a nice pruple bruise on my right shoulder and a brush burn!!!

Full power .270 has a substantial kick!!

The ammo I was using says its good for brown bear, and moose!!

The vanguard performed flawlessly, I was able to keep 20 rounds in the 2.25" bull of a 50yrd small bore rifle target.
kneeling I produced a 5 shot .75" group which was my best.

This is a very nice rifle, great for the money.
