Weatherby Vanguard Series 2

I am the proud father of a brand new Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in .308. I traded in my Rem M7 to Cabelas and bought the Weatherby for $429 (the shown price was $449, but they moved a little to make the sale). I just ordered some Talley one piece alloy scope mounts, which should arrive in a couple weeks (no rush since deer rifle season is over) and I have a Redfield Revolution 2-7 waiting to be mounted.

After getting rid of a 7MM-08 for which ammunition - if available - cost at least $29/box of 20 it is refreshing to see ammunition in many flavors, much of it at relatively low cost. A box of Rem UMJ was just $10.99 and Rem CoreLokt was only $19.99. I have had good experience with the CoreLokt in the past, but any advice on other good deer rounds in .308 would be appreciated. Has anyone tried Cabela's home brand, HSM? It has gotten good reviews and it can be pretty inexpensive.

Congrats on the new rifle, I just got one myself in 243. I took it out last weekend and it shot three sub 1" groups.

Warbirdlover, are you nuts, it's in the 30s. In a blind with a heater I could understand, but at Bristol?????

Oh, by the way Joe Chicago, congrats on the rifle.

Jim

Bristol has encosed, heated shooting areas where you stick the barrel out a window, just like a deer blind. And the open areas have a roof over your head so you don't get wet. I can take 35º F. It's the -20º F that I won't fool with! And Sunday is going to be 37º F and sunny! :D

100/200 yards: 10 stations indoors (heated); 20 stations outdoors

My scope mounts arrived and I mounted the scope. The bolt handle clears the scope handily, even with the low mounts. I shall hit Bristol to break in the barrel and zero my scope after the holidays.

Shooting deer with a .308 Winchester it doesn't matter too much what cartridge you shoot. The deer will still be dead if you manage to hit it properly.

Picked up my Vanguard S2 in .308 a while back.
Finally got to the range with it to test my handloads.

The pic is a 10 shot 100yd group.
Had one flyer to the right(did not have the butt in my shoulder solid enough).
One small flyer just to the left, maybe not a flyer but was out of the group a tad.
The 8 shot group is MOA.

The load is 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 46.0gr Varget.

For the money, I think I have a winner of a hunting rifle.

I have had good experience with the CoreLokt

So have I. There are 'better' rounds out there apparently but this old standard still seems to work for me. Then again I've never shot game over 200 yards which might be where your premium rounds justify their premium price.
