Just started loading some rounds for my 30-06 Weatherby Vanguard series 2, first rounds were loaded at .020 off lands. Anyone else have this rifle and any input on loading off of lands? Thanks
I believe you might be jumping the gun. You mention that you are just starting to load. I think seating depth is one of the last processes to tune a load.
So you are shooting a 30-06 in a good quality hunting rifle. So I will assume you are using it for hunting. A 150-165gr. bullet would be adequate for med. size game. Antelope, Deer size. Most all of the manufacturers make good bullets. If you will be shooting under 300 Yds. A flat base will do, if you want a little more for distance try a boat tail. Hornadys are all you need and probably close to most practical. If you want to spend more for some reason try nosler. I would leave the powder to the forum to advise since I am out of touch with the latest choices in the 06. Take your time and work up some loads 3-5 shot groups. Make a choice and then try a few different primers to see if that can help. Then play around with the seating depth but stay off of the lands and make sure the rounds feed through the magazine.
Thanks Longshot, Remington core-lokts have always shot well thru my gun, so I pulled a bullet from a core-lokt and measured the jump. Right on .020. They were easily shooting 1" MOA, so I will work loads up slowly from there. I am currently working up Hornady 168 BTHP and 180 Nosler BT loads. Looks like you were spot on.
