weatherby mark XXII

i happened upon a tube fed Mk XXII at my local gun store and bought it on a lark, wanted one in my youth and could never afford it, i really wanted the clip fed model but figured it might be my last chance.

took it out and shot it, now i understand why it cost so much more than my ruger or norinco atd. now i'm starting to look at the little dings and scratches on the beautiful stock.

does anyone know of a source for a replacement stock or should i try removing the shiny finish to get at the wood itself. there are only a few dings, no gouges or crushed wood.

i'm looking for advice or a source of infomation, i'm mostly a handgun and "black rifle" kinda guy.

thanks all, this is a great site

I don't really have the patience or expertise to be good at stock refinishing. I envy those who do.

My personal opinion is that an oiled finish is much prettier than the high shine of Weatherby's epoxy coating. (My old Mark V is original, and needs help.)

If you have pretty wood, I'm not sure that you'd do better to get a replacement from the Wby folks. Otherwise, "life is a learning curve"--although you might practice on some other stock for a first effort...

I bought a XXII about 15 years ago for $25. The gun had been leaned against a space heater and the stock was toast.I looked around for a replacement a few years ago and it seems Weatherby stocks go for $250-300. I painted mine.
BTW, it's very accurate.
