I have a couple of Remington 700's and have owned Winchester 70's. Both are OK and the latter is a lot better now than at any time since 1964. The Ruger 77 is also a very decent rifle, and there are some excellent foreign makes.
I have used pre-WWII Model 70's and they are fine rifles, but I think a lot of the "Rifleman's Rifle" business is nostalgia. I don't think they are really any better than the current Winchesters. I will put one rumor to rest, though. It has been stated that the post-64 Model 70 receiver is cast, where the old one was forged. Not true. The post-64 receiver is forged; the pre-64 receiver was milled from bar stock.
Basically, it comes down to preferences. Everyone gives advice, but it is like deciding on a wife or girlfriend; it really comes down to a personal choice that no one else can make for you.
Go to gun show, handle as many rifles as you can, borrow rifles from friends and shoot them, decide on what you want in a rifle. For accuracy, I will again say that I don't think .308 has any real advantage over .30-'06. Further, the types of rifles you are discussing are hunting rifles and not target rifles, though some will shoot very well.
HTH and Merry Christmas.
