I have a Weatherby MK V in 30-06 Springfield I like the rifle but am interested in .308 Win would I be stupid to try to get it rebarelled ? I dont have the money to just go buy another rifle and ''the guns breeding in the closet'' thing dosent seem to work with my wife. thanks in advance Chet

Not stupid, but I see no point in it. Anything the .308 will do, the .30-'06 will do better. True, .308 (7.62 NATO) surplus ammo is available cheap, but so is .30-'06 and I doubt that you are going to use a Weatherby to play rapid fire games and burn up thousands of rounds of ammo. People on here talk casually about rebarrelling, but a good rebarrel job may cost quite a bit more than you think.

In the interests of keeping the finish consistent, I would have Weatherby do it if you do go ahead. You might call them and ask what they would charge, which you can accept or use for comparison with estimates from local gunsmiths.

Thanks Jim I guess i might reconsider the rebarrel idea but the reason that i am considering the .308 is for the range and the accuracy not necessarily the hunting advantages (ie)long distance shooting. when it comes to hunting i am shooting black powder for the challenge as the areas that i hunt can be as remote as i want with alot of trees and closer encounters with the game. That includes grizzly bears but i guess not everywhere is perfect. Can you recommend a rifle that is not overboard on price I hear so many people saying good and bad things about the Win. model 70 and the Rem 700 but what does a person believe are the old ones the only good ones or is it all BS? any advice is appreciated................Chet

I have a couple of Remington 700's and have owned Winchester 70's. Both are OK and the latter is a lot better now than at any time since 1964. The Ruger 77 is also a very decent rifle, and there are some excellent foreign makes.

I have used pre-WWII Model 70's and they are fine rifles, but I think a lot of the "Rifleman's Rifle" business is nostalgia. I don't think they are really any better than the current Winchesters. I will put one rumor to rest, though. It has been stated that the post-64 Model 70 receiver is cast, where the old one was forged. Not true. The post-64 receiver is forged; the pre-64 receiver was milled from bar stock.

Basically, it comes down to preferences. Everyone gives advice, but it is like deciding on a wife or girlfriend; it really comes down to a personal choice that no one else can make for you.

Go to gun show, handle as many rifles as you can, borrow rifles from friends and shoot them, decide on what you want in a rifle. For accuracy, I will again say that I don't think .308 has any real advantage over .30-'06. Further, the types of rifles you are discussing are hunting rifles and not target rifles, though some will shoot very well.

HTH and Merry Christmas.

Jim

Thanks I think I will stick with my 30-06 and see just what I can get it to do.After all the long rang hype about the .308 I didnt realize that the 06 wasnt all that different..........Chet
