Weather resistant treatment

Knox

I've got a friend who has the set up to glass bead my SAR. I'd like to upgrade the finish to go along with that nice poly set from KVAR which is on the way.
My questions are: What is the best finish I can get applied with respect to weather durability but also looks good? I want something that will handle the elements. What do I need to do once he has it down to bare metal if it may take the smith a week or so to work me in? And finally, anyone know anyone in the Knoxville area who does good work at a decent price? I don't want to ship it off?
Any tips appreciated as well!

Rust proof?

Nickle is the way to go. Any other of the high tech finishes such as Robar are also good except in the looks department. Glass beading is great preparation but you need something better than WD-40 to protect the bare steel between blasting and the plater.

There are a few great industrial products for this and are sold under Rust-Ban, Rust Veto, and others. It is a heavy grease dissolved in a light solvent and is quite tacky. A metal shop usually has buckets of it for preserving machined surfaces, weld preparations etc. The only home-use version is canned for use in preserving bicycle frames and is sold under the Wiegle's Frame Saver name. It about $10 a can but it works GREAT. Paint thinnner etc will remove it. It also great for long term storage but be sure to clean the firearm well before use.

Thanks for the reply. However, the SAR is an AK-47 clone and I will be switching the wood stock set for a black synthetic stock. I really need an option that looks black or close to black but has good weather resistant properties.

I have bead blasted then painted/baked a rifle and a shotgun with Brownell's gun coat. Finish is matte black and both have been subjected to hunting/truck gun use for three years now. Never had any rust or flaking, the stuff is quite durable. Probably not as good as the professional finishes, but easy and cheap.

Your best bet for a black finish you can do yourselves is Norrell MolyResin in either flat black or semi-gloss black. I have it on several pieces I own, and the stuff is extremely tough, and resistant to virtually every chemical known to man. It's a spray & bake finish with exceptional rust inhibiting properties, and it looks pretty decent, too.
