WD40ish cleaner?

I used to use WD40 to clean my guns. It seemed to work. It cut through gunk and left a thin layer of lubricant and rust inhibitor. I have since read here that this is a temporary illusion. In any case, is there another cleaner/lubricator/rust inhibitor that I could use that is similar to the positive properties of WD40 but does not have the long term negatives?

I use Liquid Wrench super lubricant for all my weapons cleaning; mechanisms, internal parts, even the bore. Only rarely do I have to get out the solvent. It cleans and protects but does not leave a varnish film like WD. It seems to be the same thing as CLP but for alot less money.

Using WD40 as a cleaner or lubricant is a short-term fix that could create long-term problems.

WD-40 is, in effect, mineral oil. It ability to lubricate is limited. Its chief virtue is that it drives out moisture. It will, however, dry and gunk/shellac up leaving residue and potential problems.

I'll spray a little WD 40 on a patch to wipe down the outside of a rifle or shotgun.

I'll spray it around the insde of a 1911 if I'm just going to clean the barrel and then shoot more the next day. After a complete disassembly for "real" cleaning, I'd only use WD 40 in "wipe-on" mode. It ain't much of a lubricant. The probable place for a varnish buildup problem would be inside a bolt or inside a trigger mechanism.

The various cleaners and lubricants designated for guns are much better for any spray-on usage. Most are good; there are lots of opinions about brands...

beastman,

Regular old BreakFree CLP is hard to beat.

Automobile transmition fluid works pretty well also...

RemOil, like CLP, is teflon-based. Both are good.

Of course, the absolute best is Mobil 1. I use 15W50 on all my guns.

Warning: If you use Mobil 1, don't heat your weapon to over 600 degrees, or the Mobil 1 will begin to break down.

A 50-50 mix of CorrosionX and Slick 50. The CorrosionX is by far the best rust inhibitor I have ever used and the Slick 50 is just that, Slick.

CorrosionX for cleaning and storage. Doesn't just prevent rust, but will dissolve it. Lifts lead out of the rifling too if you let it soak for a day or two, then run a patch through. I always remove any wood or rubber etc from the gun being cleaned as I don't know what effect CorrosionX will have; and it will creep all over the gun if you let it.

For cleaning I use Ed's Red, a proprietary mixture.

For rust prevention, I use Johnson's Paste Wax, applied liberally, left to dry, buffed off, and repeated.

Chances are he knows how to use it.

Hoppe's #9 for cleaning, occassionally Shooter's Choice when I have some.

Unlike Mr. Irwin, I use Trutle Wax for rust prevention on carbon steel; and sometimes on stainless that gets much sweat or salt spray. Probably something to do with the fact that I spent a lot of time in humid climates before stainless steel was used for guns. There is probably stuff much more useful now - but for me - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hey JimFox,

Turtle Wax and Johnson's Paste Wax contain the same thing... high concentrations of carnuba wax...

An old-time mix is half Marvel Mystery Oil and half 30-weight ( clean & fresh, not used ) motor oil. This was a favorite of a policeman/SCUBA diver friend who went out to sea a lot with firearms.

Every bad experience I've heard of starts with somone using 3-in-1 or some other brand with too much parafin, and ends with a sticky firing pin on the first day of Buck Season.

Some of the reccommendation others have posted may work in fair weather, but don't use them on your hunting weapons if you live up north.

I say stick with the name brand products intended for gun use (Hoppes, Outers, Breakfree. ect.. ) The folks who have been in the gun business for decades pretty much have things figured out.

Sounds like the makings for a good science fiction movie...

Best lube/cleaner = BreakFree

Best rust prevention = S&W Friction Block
