Washington State Semi-auto ban

Hello All,

I heard over the radio on the way home that three Washington State Senators plan to introduce legislation to ban semi autos due to the Lakewood Police shootings. I'm not surprised in the least but it's still frustrating. It just doesn't end. I haven't found anything about it at the other gun boards. I just
thought I should mention it.

Yes, I heard that also, along with many other rumors and guesses. As the political chairman for our club, I am tasked to hunt down all such speculations. The good news this year is that the "kids in the halls" only have 60 days of mischief, unless the Governor calls for more!:eek:

They do produce some good things.....

Two of the Senators are from Seattle, and one from nearby. They want to ban the sale of "military assault weapons" from the public, aided by Washington CeaseFire, and the other usual suspects.

There was an article about it in the Seattle paper (Dec 17).

They aren't real clear on what a military assault weapon is (or maybe it was the reporter), but they aren't used for hunting (they say).

Considering the 4 police officers murdered were killed with an ordinary .38 revolver (the killer did not use an "evil" semiautomatic, although he had one of them, taken from one of the cops, when he was killed), calling for the end of selling "military assault weapons" to the public seems par for the course.

We should, of course fight this as strongly as we can, but I won't loose any sleep over it. With all the other (particularly money) troubles, I can't see our legislators (other than the ones from left coast areas) doing anything to make themselves even less popular.

i seriously doubt it will happen even when they were talking about on q13 news there wasnt much talk about it this is just goin to be another wannabe WA. gun ban kinda like the NO GUNS IN PUBLIC PARKS BAN we saw how far that went
 
The ban would cover semiautomatics designed for military use that are capable of rapid-fire and can hold more than 10 rounds. Semiautomatics designed for sporting or hunting purposes wouldn't be banned.

A revolver has faster shooting potential than any semi auto.

And the only "military" semi autos that are used to my knowledge are the m9 beretta and the 1911, which aren't any more lethal or "faster" than anything else. Since the 1911 is considered a "military" sidearm its also the only full sized semi that holds less than 10 rounds. That means ALL semi autos would be banned.


Were these politicians born that stupid or did they have to work for it?

I don't understand what your point is about the public parks ban... it is in full effect and force right now and being challenged in court, but as of right now police are removing persons carrying firearms from parks and community centers.

I am not one to run around screaming the "the sky is falling" UNLESS the sky is truly falling. It is my opinion that we as a firearms community need to focus on real issues and not let the paranoid thoughts of the press push us in the wrong direction.

With that said, a AWB as been on the minds of those in power here in Washington for several years. That's not correct - Sigs, Lugers, P-38s, etc. have full sized models with less than 10 rounds capacity.

Also, the 'fast' issue regarding firearms is usually couched in terms of reload times. Unless you are Jerry Miculek or another competitor, you aren't as fast on the reload with a revolver.

Let's avoid making technical mistakes if we engage politicians.
 
Saw on KIRO 7 news last night that the public face behind the push for the AW ban is a black woman whose son was one of this year's shooting victims. Came late to the broadcast so didn't catch her name or the specific shooting that took her boy but did catch her comment to the effect that she didn't want her son to die in vain.

Sad that she thinks the best way to honor her dead son is the take away the rights from the living.
 
Great; another low-IQ type who claims "Oh, boo-hoo, someone I care about was killed by a gun, so let's take away the guns from everybody, including law-abiding citizens who had nothing to do with my son's death".
 
This proposal is one that could certainly pass the Legislature. It's allegedly about 'military' arms and large capacity magazines, the public can be gulled into thinking that's not an infringement on their rights. It's also allegedly about the Lakewood killings, which is a hot issue here. Look for more on this bill, and expect to have to fight as a serious matter.
 
I hope you have written to the senators involved. If not, send them a nice letter explaining the man who did the shooting was not legally able to have a firearm, so the law would have no effect on him.
It would only have an effect on those who obey the law. Keep it nice and offer to provide more info to them or put them in touch with someone who can educate them.
You'll probably not get a response if they are really for the push of banning gun, but who knows. Start early and get out there ahead of the nutcases who want to ban everything that is potentially dangerous in the wrong hands.
 
I was thinking the other night at the bar, and i think i have a solution to the problem of people sustaining crippling neck injuries in diving accidents: outlaw wheelchairs. :barf:
 
This was just pandering to their constituants. Doesn't have a chance in hell of even getting out of committee, let alone the legislature passing, let alone the governor signing it.
