Was at the right place at the right time today!

Stopped by a local sporting goods (hunting & fishing) store today just to pic up some '05 hunting regs and and license applications. Of course I had to snoop around the counter that has handguns in it.

Lo and behold, there was a guy trading in 3 guns, one of which was a Taurus M445 2" 44 spl. blued, with fixed sights in 90+% condition. I fell in love with it. It has the sweetest double action pull on it I have ever felt on any revolver.

For $150 it followed me home. :p

Well, the best I could do was a Colt Detctive Special, 3rd issue for $225... I went in to pick up my Trailside (online purchase) and the shop owner started telling me about a collection of revovlers he'd bought. I looked at a few, and the Colt really needed a home. Its in excellent + condition, with only a minor holster-rub on the end of the barrel and one small nick in the grips.

The 629 they had, a 4" in excellent condition, was solid (good timing/lockup, no end shake, nice trigger) except that opening the cylinder was very sticky... not sure if the cylinder release plunger inside the frame is a bit short, or....? I could get it for $300 out the door, but not too sure of S&Ws repairs these days.... There was also a very nice 6" 29, but it was nickel and I just abhor that old yellow-tint nickel.

He also had a LNIB Colt Ananconda with ported 8" barrel, among others...

I'm going back on Monday to pick up the Det. Spl. (no checkbook today), and will look more then (the dealer isn't putting them out for the general public until next week). There's a S&W 60 I didn't have time to check out).

He also had a LNIB MkI Desert Eagle in .357, complete with box and papers... Not my cup of tea, but not often seen in that condition.

A couple of weeks ago my wife called me and told me that there were some LE trade-in revolvers at the local LE distributor. I went down there and bought an 85% Colt Cobra 38 Special for $175. There was a Model 60 Smith that I was going give another look, but I found out that the day after I bought the Cobra the local SO had retrieved all the guns that weren't sold because they had not cleared the sale with the county commisioners. The Cobra is going to make a great backup gun. :)

Well, my little story is I went to a small gunshow yesterday. The only thing I saw was a 4" S&W Model 57. It was in ok shape with rubber grips and no accesories. It was a consignment gun and the $400 + tax & transfer fee. Thanks but no thanks. I'm a fan of M57s especially 4"ers. I have 3 in the safe.

So I stop off at a local sporting goods store. They usually don't have used N frames but their prices are fair. Lo and behold they have a M57 no dash with a 6" tube. Real nice shape, correct furniture but no box. A little haggling and we go out the door at $350. :D Since a beat up 6" went for $450 on another board this week I figure I'm way ahead of the game.

9x19, odds are that the ejector rod has unscrewed a little, it is left hand threads. Check it when you go back, that is a SMOKING good price.

Well I went back to the shop yesterday morning and once the smoke had cleared, I came home with the following:

Colt Detective Special, Blued 3rd Issue (with barrel underlug) ~ $225

Smith & Wesson 60 (no dashes) with matching two piece box, tools and papers ~ $235

Smith & Wesson 629-1, 4"... cylinder is a bit sticky on opening but timing is perfect and lock-up is solid! ~ $300
FWIW I cleaned under the star and checked the ejector rod... still sticky... seems to me the plunger in the frame is just a bit short as it is not flush with the recoil shield when forward... may just send it back to S&W and get them to go over it.

My best effort came right before Christmas 2004, while working at a
sporting goods stores gun counter a gentleman comes in with a S&W
2" factory nickel model 10 with a pinned barrel, that dates back to
late 1972 or very early 1973. He wants to trade it in on a Taurus
Tracker .357 magnum, so the owner tells him be will allow him $150
towards the trade.

Thats when I made my play by offering the fell'a $150 CASH for this
most excellent S&W model 10. Low and behold, he took me up on
the offer; so now I'm the proud owner of this little K-frame gem.

BTW, the model 10 has laid in a bedroom dresser drawer for the last
10-15 years serving as a home D' weapon. It has been shot very
little, as there is NO drag line visible! I think I did OK on this one?

Best Wishes,

Your anecdote's dates confuse me, Ala Dan . . . this happened just before Christmas 2004, and the revo's been sitting in your drawer for the last 10-15 years?

Thanks, U.F.O.; I'm a doofus.

I don't know what was wrong with the "reading comprehension" part of my brain last visit . . .

WooHoo!

The good news: The 629 needs no parts!! :D

I finally had time to take it apart today, and all I found was soot, old grease, and power residue... the action was, in a word, filthy!

Why do people let their pistols stay like that?

The frame track for the bolt, and the window for the thumb-piece were black with old grease/soot! I cleaned it all up and the bolt now goes forward until its flush with the recoil shield, so... the cylinder now opens with ease! :D
