Ever since that first day you stepped on the field to face the muskets, you have fought for justice. You stepped forward to cross dark seas to fight only for freedom, and prove that life itself is worth fighting for. Thank you.
You came forward to fight when dark forces seized the hearts of the Japanese and they denied life to so many. While those in my family watched their homes burned and loved ones violated, you came in your ships, stepped forward onto distant beaches and paid in blood for every step you took. You fought far above in the skies where we could not see you, far below in the ocean where death came silent, and in fields and jungles where life itself was cruel. Through privations you persevered, through hardships you fought through, and gave unto us a future worth living. Thank you.
You came back when the communists struck, in many places. Time and again you came forward to fight wrong. Betrayed by politicians, forgotten by your own people, you still came forward for us. You wore disgrace with nobility, praise with humility. And though you sometimes erred and carried hatred away from the field of battle, you learned to recognize the truth and embrace the humanity in all of us. Thank you.
Without you, I would not be alive. My family would have died in Asia had you not had the courage to bear the weight of cruelty and take us all into the atomic age. My loved ones fought for you; at times vilified, at others we carried the burden of injustice against us; but we still loved you.
I owe you my life in debt. Without you I would not have come to life. I pray that I will have the one chance in my life to give it as you did, the one chance to prove that you are remembered and I honor your legacy, the trust you gave to us all to hold. Thank you. God be with you always this day, the next, and forever more.
