Warranties on Used Guns?

Question - if you buy a used firearm - say from Colt, S&W, or even Taurus...will they still back the gun up under warranty if you have a problem with it?
 
Colt to my knowledge will not warranty any used revolvers and will charge you for any needed services.

S&W warranties it's new gun for life to the original owner. However, I have never known them to not repair a used gun at no cost, if it is a normal "wear and tear" repair.

Taurus will warranty any gun new or used for lifetime.

So will Charter Arms, regardless of which incarnation of the company it was under with no questions.

Ruger technically doesn't have a warranty BUT will repair almost any of their guns for no charge.
 
Some companies like Taurus have a lifetime warranty on the weapon, other dealers have a 30 - 90 day functionality warranty, I would guess it depends on the weapon. I am sure you can with the manufacture regarding their weapons.
 
I can only speak to S&W from past experience. It's a crap shoot on used, not the original owner. For me, it depended on who answered the CS line. Some will say yes, probably, yeah we can do that for you, and others say no, original owner only. It's confusing to me.
 
Add KelTec (lifetime to original owner) and Kimber (1 year) to the usually fix it for free list even if not first owner. Both have done repairs for me for free as 2nd owner.

Depends entirely on the company.

Taurus will. Kel Tec and S&W are explicitly to the original buyer. The manual for the XD I bought said "original purchaser", but I've never heard of anyone have any trouble getting service from Springfield. Ruger has no written warranty, and covers all owners.
 
I believe that only Taurus will warranty its' products for life no matter how many times it has changed hands. From the little reading I have been able to do on the subject S&W repair prices don't seem to be out of line.
 
I looked in the box my Para-Ordnance came in and it says pretty much forever, regardless of who owns it.

Springfield, as short a time as 2 years ago, had the same policy.

Could be that things change :rolleyes:.

Don't forget that many dealers will warranty any gun they sell. Some say so, but make exceptions for "as is" purchases. Others won't say so, but will take back or repair any gun, new or used, that has a defect.

This is not entirely a matter of good will (though there is some of that). There is what is called the common law of merchantability, which means that an item sold must do what it is supposed to do and not be dangerous to a knowlegeable user. That law applies whether or not there is any written or stated warranty and unless the sale is specifically understood to be "as is" by all parties.

Ummmm S&W has repared several used firearms for me free of charge on as someone said normal wear n tear. My favorite example is I got a used shooter well worn Highway Patrolman at a flea market for a few bucks... $300. if I remember right. The thing would shave lead and I just couldnt get to time right. I sent it off to Smith for repair, and rebluing. After 6 months Smith sent my gunshop a letter that they were having problems reparing the gun. about three weeks later my gun came back. It looked brand spanking new. The best refinish I'd ever seen. Beautiful action job, perfect timing, tight cylinder. The only thing they didnt do is replace the grips. As I admired my $300. beater I noticed... IT WAS A NEW GUN!!!:eek: Stamped with my gun's serial number.

Evidently S&W couldnt fix my old gun... so they serialed a new one to replace it. IMO thats some pretty good waranted service. And decent customer service.

Oh yeah...didnt cost me a dime.
 
Rather than start my own thread I figure I will ask here, What about Glock?
I have been thinking of buying a used Glock 17 or 19 but I want a warranty, I thought the guy at my LGS said they had transferable lifetime warranties last time I was there but I was sort of gunstruck so to speak.
 
Hi-point,whether you are the 1st owner or the 50th.Any gun you buy through Davidson's also carries a lifetime warranty :D I have three!
 
With davidsons, im guessing original owner only? I like davidsons, guns with crappy warranties (like beretta, kimber) are actually options to buy now that there being backed up. They make cool exclusives too.
 
I would like to see a gun company promote their guns based on NO WARRANTY! That's right. The best guns I've ever purchased were used guns that had no warranty and needed no warranty.

Have you ever read a "Warranty" ? It isn't a warranty at all, just s a bunch of disclaimers, exceptions and exclusions written by teams of lawyers.

I always thought that if I had a great idea for a firearm, decided to manufacture it, I'd purposely leave out any POS warranty certificate. Over-engineer the gun to the point where it can handle someone's crappy reloads without blowing up. Make every gun perfect. Inspect every part and every gun before it leaves the factory. Fire some double-charged reloads in it to make sure it won't "glockaboom".

Do you want a warranty? Or a kick-butt perfect gun.
