Warped barrel on 1927 Winchester?

Today I was given the fantastic gift of a 1927 Winchester Model 12, 12-gauge pump. On the magazine, just above the point where the slide handle hits when it's fully extended, the metal is split by about a half centimeter and bulged. It almost looks like it's supposed to be that way, like the bulge keeps the slide handle from extending too far. Is that so, or is this a warped magazine? If it is a warped magazine, will it do any harm? I'm hoping to fire the gun over the weekend. Otherwise, the gun is in beautiful condition. Thanks for your insight.

Mod 12 mag.

Is this what you are asking about? This is on my '29.

Greetings, Warfieldred, and welcome aboard.

What you're referring to is the Model 12s Imminent Failure Warning, or IFW. When this condition occurs, you are just a few shots away from a catastrophic failure. I'm sorry to say, there is no fix for this condition, and your only course of action is to have the complete gun properly disposed of by a Winchester certified disposer. Not to worry, this is your lucky day, I just happen to be a Winchester certified disposer. As a holiday special, I will take your M-12 without the customary disposal fees. Please contact me for additional information so we may expedite the transfer. ;)

Zippy, you should be ashamed to mislead Warfield that way. Yes, that bump is part of the design of the mag tube, don't worry about it. Goatwhiskers

Thanks, guys. I'll let you know how the gun fires. Since it's a 1927 with a serial number of 499,+++, I understand that 2 3/4 inch shells are the way to go, right?

Don't know that gun but....
2 3/4 inch shells are the way to go, right?
Unless your gun is 2 9/16ths chamber or shorter... I am under the impression that pre-40's it is a toss up and gun needs measured if not stamped.

nothing wrong with your model 12. I am looking at one now, and the bulge is a stop and the little crosswise split is to aid in raising the bulge.
