I'm wanting to scope either my Marlin 336 or AR15, possibly both. Which rifle would you scope? I'm looking at a maximum range of 500 yards for my rifles given the caliber and rifle twist. The purpose of these rifles is hunting and defense. Please feel free to recommend a scope or scopes for these rifles or your opinion against scoping one or both.

I didn't vote, because it would help to know what you hunt... If big game, what conditions, open plains or thick woods, or mixed?

Either way, I can't recommend enough the Weaver classic K, 4 power fixed scope... Just got one, and the color, clarity, etc amaze me every time I look through it. 4 power is good for most any reasonable shot, especially within 30/30 ranges, although I wouldn't use it for defense, unless you keep shooting as they run away.

What does your Marlin shoot? If it is a traditional chamber ie .30-30 or .35 Rem you're going to need a scope with some serious adjustment to get to 500 yards. I'd scope the AR if it has a flat top receiver, I really don't like the scope attached to the carry handle. Realistically the .223 if that is your AR chamber will be easier to shoot out to 500 yards.

500 yards with a 30-30? That would be beyond my skill.

Anyway, hunting range, no matter what you are hunting will likely be under 300 yards so I would suggest a 3 x 9 scope. I prefer Nikon.

I don't think it would behoove you to try to use either at 500 yards...

I'd say scope either but stick to 200 yards; 250 max.

Scope both, I have a scope on all my rifles for someone who has used scopes 40+ years I simply find precision shooting with scopes more enjoyable.

Remember the effective range of your cartridges. Small game with the 223 out to 500 yds is not out of reason. The same thing on medium game and you will definately have to lessen the distance. The 30-30 is essentially a short range medium game cartridge. 150 yards is about as far as you should hunt. Whether to scope or not is your choice. The best candidate for the scope is the 223.

sc928porsche: With leverevolution ammo and the newer style Marlin rifles (from when they first came out, not the ones being produced today), he should be able to go 250 yards with the 30-30.

Older style rifle and conventional flat nose ammo: 150, agreed.
