I don't hunt, but I like to shot clays with friends in the back yard a couple times a year. I don't want to spend a lot and it does not have to be pretty, just dependable. THANKS!:)

Your best bet woud be to buy a used Remington Model 1100

They can be had in the $250 - $450 price range.

Or you can buy a new Spartan - Remington Shotgun off the rack for about the same price.

i would highly recommend a Remington SPR453 (Spartan 453, Baikal MP153). they can be found for less than $400 new, 4+1 capacity, built like a tank, come with 4 screw in chokes, and the capability to shoot 2 3/4", 3", and 3.5" shells. they also come with an adjustable gas system (something not found in alot of guns 2-3 times the cost) that allows you to shoot the lighest 2 3/4" target loads to the heaviest 3.5" magnum loads you can find. i have used mine extensively for skeet and sporting clays, and a few times for bird hunting, and i have no complaints whatsoever. i usually shoot with a friend who has a Remington 11-87, and mine always performs as well or better than his. he also gets jealous that i can shoot 1 oz. shells as well as 3.5" shells and he can't, yet he paid almost $200 more for his gun.

if you have any doubt about how well this gun is built, check out this video. (the video is of a baikal mp153, but the SPR453 is exact same gun with a few updated parts):

My neighbor has a older 1100 12 gauge with mod barrel that looks real good. I think I could buy it around 375-400. I don't know if I would like a mod barrel for clays and it does not have a recoil pad.

+1 1100- Mine has done 15,000+ rds and is just as reliable as ever. It looks like it has been in the bottom of the ocean for a week, but its innnards are as good as ever...

That price is a little high, Z4oo for a used model 1100..

You could shop around some and find a better deal.

The Modified choke barrel is excellent for shooting clays in the backyard.

You can buy a recoil pad for less than $20, so I guess what you are saying is that you don't want to spend any money..

BOTH MYSELF AND SCTIGERJEEP reccomended you buying a new gun - for under $500 that you would be proud to own and would know the history of - because you would be the only owner.

Where as, if you could find a new Benelli or Browning Gold Hunter 12 gauge - out the door for less than $500.. I would eat my hat!

Used 1100 is the best bet.

The Spartan is a good gun as well.

I have a CZ712M that I am more than happy with, and they go for around that when you can find them, since CZ no longer imports them.

Stoeger and Franchi both have models that are similar to, or identical to, the inertia system. Much easier to clean, take apart, maintain than any gas system. Also, much more reliable. Both guns are pretty inexpensive. The Soeger might still be under $400. I think its called the 2000. If you are not into guns, then a gas-operated auto-loader is bad medicine.

I would hit the gunshows or haunt the used racks at the local gun shops. You should be able to get a nice, used 1100 vent-rib gun with recoil pad for $350.

26" IC is just about perfect in my book.

I havev had bad experiences with Franchi's and Beretta's.

Not that I am going to say that they are all bad guns. Just that the ones that I had were not as good as my Model 1100 Remington.

The Model 1100 is such a good gun that you almost never see a used one for sale unless someone dies and their kids don't hunt / shoot.

The one that I owned had a lot of rust on it and I bought it for $350.

The funny thing was that I went to the gunshop looking for a rifle and came home with a shotgun.

I used it for 7 years and sold it for as much as I had in it. So that was a pretty good deal for me because it was as if I used it all that time for free.

The story about the O rings is totally bogus because mine still had the origional one in it from 1974 when the gun was made 20 years before and I never had to replace it.

The owners manual says something about proper cleaning and maintence and torque specs when you assemble the gun. As long as you follow them, you will never have a problem with them.

As Wykopedia says - the model 1100 was brought back because the wingshooters would not let it die..

500. id buy 2 new 870 exspress on sale all the time 210 250 i get a 28" for the clays and a 24" for home defense. 500 could probably get you 4 870s used. maybe more

didnt finish, if you are just going to shoot clays in back yard once in a while 870 is more than you will ever need, recoil issues not really, soft recoil pad and rem low recoil shells, 1100 1187 or browning gold. easy to clean. parts are are plentifull.

Mossberg 930

Mossberg 930......do a search and let me know if you find ANY bad comments (other than the ones saying..."It's a Mossberg, Blah, Blah, Blah)

I have over 4,000 rounds through mine, it has been great. Cost me just over $400 and it has never failed to cycle, fire, or feed.

Plus, It's....MADE IN THE USA!!!!!

Well, I am thinking hard about the New Remingtom SPR 453! I priced one today, $385+tax. That is a lot of gun for the money. I also have a neighbor with a 1100 20 gauge with mod, non vent rib barrel for $300. It has a very small scratch on the stock.
