Want to hear a good rifle story?

A lot of you chimed in on my choice for a rifle out of my collection for opening deer season here in Bama last week (.243, 45/70, 30/30). Since I was going with my 69-year-old father, I went with nostalgia and took the recently-restored Marlin 336A 30/30 he gave me at Christmas when I was 14 (26 years ago). OF COURSE a buck walked out 50 yards from my stand and stood broad-side to me holding up a sign that said "SHOOT ME". Every seen a 69-year old man high-five you and brag to everyone for the rest of the day that "my son shot that with the rifle I gave him when he was 14"? I swear he was far more proud of the fact I shot that deer with that rifle than any other deer(s) we have killed over the last 10 years. Goos stuff!

Good story indeed. Glad your Dad enjoyed the hunt....and certainly a good choice of the rifle on your part. Sounds like it couldn't have turned out any better if you had planned it out ahead of time. Are you sure you didn't have that deer tethered to a stake? :D

No stake....

But when I pulled the hammer back on that Marlin, it made an audible click and that deer look right at my stand and did not move for 5 seconds while I steadied the crosshairs (on the old Weaver 4X scope) right behind his front legs....it was almost as if it was one of those full-size deer decoys people put out and shoot at with their bows.

Great story. It's not the deer this year for you. It's the memory that you gave your father that was important this year. You should be proud of yourself for giving him a memeory that will last forever.:D

That is an AWESOME story, thanks for sharing that. As I have often found, sometimes, the real beauty of hunting, is lost in the gear and how big the rack scored, and the Magnums..

What it really comes down to...At the end of life, when we start to reflect on what made our stay here so enjoyable, we won't be thinking of that expensive GPS unit, or our 300 dollar Gor-tex boots...We will think of times like that. Happy Hunting.

P.S.-I think your story is a falshood....everyone knows that a 30-30 doesnt have enough power to stop a deer. For that you need a .437 Loudenboomer...

Dads can be that way - proud of son's "trophies" - we had no deer in the Nebraska Sandhills back in 1933 but, you can see how proud my dad was of his hunter son and trophies -

How different attitudes were then - a kid walking down the road with his rifle in hand only drew friendly smiles and waves - those were good days.

How true. You have a memory for yourself as well that you will not forget.

Thanks for sharing.

Great experience!

I'm enjoying hunting with my son and three grandsons; all with rifles I either gave or loaned to them.
