Want New Gun, But Have No Idea What to Get?

I want a new gun. DUH!!!, doesn't everyone? But I don't know what I want. Make some suggestions. Ceiling is $550. Gun prices around here are reasonable though, so I won't end up paying high prices for a gun. The only requirements might be that it would have to be cheap to shoot, useable for light hunting(coyote, raccoon, etc.), and COULD be used for defense. Concealed carry is not an option in Daleyland.

Thanks for looking!!!

My suggestion.....

I'm sure that you will recieve various suggestions from folks on this site, but heres mine. You indicated 4 things you were looking for:$550, cheap to shoot, light hunting, self defense. I suggest the Taurus PT99. It is around $500. Has a lifetime warantee Its 9mm, ammo is the least expensive, other than 22(which should not be used for a defense weapon), can be used effectively for self defense. I have had 2, It was my first gun. I traded the 1ST, and then turned around a week later and bought another new one. That's how much I liked the gun. Let us know how you do, and Be Careful.

I've been in a "need another revolver" mode my self and for $550 you should be able to find a nice one. I'd say pre-owned 4" 686 would be ideal. Cheap to practice w/ the 38's and have 357's for self/home defense and critters.

OOOPS :o I guess this is the semi-auto board, you wanted a semi auto recommendation. Well, from what I've read and heard from guys that have purchased this gun, the Springfield XD-9 is a nice, inexpensive little piece and should serve your purposes well.

I don't know if anybody mentioned it yet, but you could get a CZ-75B. :p

They're available new for under $400 and you could put the money you saved towards the $200 factory .22LR Kadet kit for cheaper practice.

Get a Makarov or a Sistema Colt and save yourself some money..

But if you *want* to spend a little more...I'd recommend 1. a Ruger P95 or 2. a CZ75

Astra 600. Fun, accurate, cheap to shoot, well made, funny looking, fixed-barrel, blow-back 9mm. Generally available for around $200. They don't make 'em like these anymore.

Put your money back in your pocket until you come across something-you JUST GOTTA HAVE.

By then your nest egg could have grown--to be able to pay for something you gotta have that costs even more---LOL.

Considering cheap to shoot and self defense, the obvious caliber is 9mm. I'd go with the Walther P99 or a Glock 19.

If you want cheap and fun get a 9mm. It may be about to surpass .357 and .45acp as my favorite caliber.

For a high quality, accurate, fun and affordable gun you can't beat a CZ 75. Since you are willing to go to $550 check out the CZ 85 Combat and CZ 75 SA depending on how you'll use it. Check out the CZ forum .

Ruger makes some very good guns. They are very reliable and durable but they aren't particularly nice. I liked my P89 that I had and it was incredibly reliable but it isn't the most refined gun out there. The CZ is just as good, much nicer and about the same price (maybe less).

Any Taurus METAL framed gun is good (stay away from the polymer framed autos). The PT 92/99/100/101 (9mm with fixed sights, 9mm with adjustable, .40 fixed, .40 adjustable) is basically the same as the Beretta 92 but with a framed mounted safety and with a better safety (it works as a decocker AND allows "cocked and locked", condition one, carry). The PT 911/940/945 (9mm, .40, .45acp) are also very nice, a bit smaller, and have the same safety.

This isn't your first gun right? If it was you should also look towards a revolver. Heck, even if it isn't you should also consider a revolver.:D

Edited: Meant to say stay away from the Taurus POLYMER guns NOT alloy guns. opps.

Look at the Sig Pro 2340. Stainless slide and a ploymer frame in 40 S&W with a well supported chamber. Mine has been accurate & reliable. I was out the door at $475. Check discountfirearms.com they have them for $455, good luck in your quest.

You don't indicate what gun(s) you already have - but if you have any for which a 22. conversion unit is available - that option would get my vote.

The only defensive pistol calibers I know that are "cheap to shoot" are the 9mm Makarov and 9mm Luger (Factory ammo).
Under $200 Bulgarian Makarov
Under $400 CZ 75
Under $550 Walther P99

Happy Shopping:)
