Want a semi

Just got in from shooting, i only have pumps 870's 500's ecx.. buddy just got a new 1100 and i love it. I would really like to start getting into skeet so i would like a auto loader...what do yall think of the 11-87 and 1100 (obviously most approved choice) or is there another model for preferably under a grand...What would you guys recommend? ;)
 
In my little corner of the world (competitive Skeet in SoCal) the Beretta autos ran the 1100s out of the Skeet business some years ago. If you've been following the Remington catalog for any number of years, you'll have noticed that the Remington 1100 Skeet models are no longer listed.
 
Skeeter that he is, Zippy nailed it - the Beretta gas guns have all but eliminated any other semi in the serious shooter category of semis. Not hard to see why - well made, easy to operate and soft shooting............if you don't reload, then chasing thew empties is not a problem - go for it and have some fun
 
Nothing wrong with an 1100. I would shop for a used one with a 2 3/4" barrel. I shot a 20ga LT20 1100 for my first year on the skeet field. As long as you are vigilant keep it clean, the 1100 will serve you well for a long time. The only thing that bugged me about the 1100, as a lefty, I would catch the gas bleed off in the face on a fairly regular basis.

Of the guys I shoot with, a few regularly shoot automatics. There are a couple 1100s (all 4 bores), a few Beretta 12 gauge guns, a Benelli Cordoba, and a Winchester Super X 1. I think most any modern auto, will serve you well. Just find one that fits well and then start scouring the used racks for that model.
 
Didnt realize they were that popular. How is the reliability of the 11-87? Im very very very anal about maintaining everything that needs it. It seems like a good deal for the price you can get one new for.
 
Yea I think I may have to take a ride out to dicks and see what they got because I want camo and such, ill see how i like the feel and go from there, if anyone has any experience with the 11-87 please comment on how you like it, any problems, what you like about it. Thanks as always guys

kx592, have you ever shot an O/U?
As much as you like the R1100 over the R870 and M500, you'll probably like an O/U over a R1100 than much again. Dalecooper51's description of the diversity in autos among his peers is understandable; but, I've never seen anything other than a tubed O/U used in the .410-bore and 28-ga events in competitive Skeet. There are all sorts of autos out there: however, if an experienced Skeet shooter is going to get a new auto, most likely it will be a Beretta.

Most folks don't realize, there's a down side to shooting a lot of Skeet -- recoil sensitivity. Competing in Skeet involves shooting .410-bore, 28, 20 and 12-ga events. Since the small guns are the hardest to master, they are the ones that are that are practiced the most. Sometimes to the exclusion of the others -- if you can ink-ball every target on the field with your .410, then the rest of the guns should pretty much fall into play. To the average shooter, a heavy 12-ga shooting target loads has a light recoil. To the Skeeter who spends most of his time finessing the little .410-bore, switching to the 12-ga is a rude awakening. The extra recoil can break his routine. One answer is to make the 12-ga behave more like a .410-bore. That's why the light recoiling Beretta is so popular in 12-ga Skeet events. To some Skeeters it's as simple as, switch to the Beretta and you scores go up.
 
Beretta is King. If you don't want to spend that kind of money and like the Rem. I'll take an 1100 over a 11-87 any day.
 
Im not going to get into it in the competition sense, just more for fun/stress reliever/ hobby. I also like 12ga because its cheaper and its what my other guns use so i buy in bulk of one type. I do have interest in the OU though but think ill like a auto more
 
11-87

I bought an 11-87 Primer LC about five years ago, and have had no problems. The "LC" is Light Contour; it's alot lighter than the 1100's. The swing is nice and we just shoot for fun. We shoot Skeet, Sporting Clays, Five Stand and Trap. Due to the single barrel you are at a disadvantage in choke selection for some of the games. The serious shooters go with an O/U; mostly for Sporting Clays.
The 11-87 does not like light loads, light loads will cause it not to cycle. I press my shells and using #8's at 1145 fps the guns does not fail.
 
If you're going to stick with just the 12, I would suggest NOT buying the heavy and hard-recoiling wally world promo packs, but use better quality target loads in 1oz or less, running 1200 fps or less. Your scores and shoulder will thank you. Typically, if the club doesn't offer a bulk buy purchase deal, then there is always a few guys who know someone who knows someone that can arrange a bulk purchase of RIO, Estate, Kemen, Fiocchis etc. for a good price. If you reload, get the Remington STS/Nitro or Winchester AA
 
I've owned a LOT of shotguns and have shot competition for many years. Of the number of Remingtons I have owned the 1100 was "OK" but didn't even come close to the Berettas in performance or quality. After shooting a Beretta and then going back and trying a Remington, it was like swinging a 4x4. No comparison, get a Beretta. There's a reason you don't see any Remingtons at sporting clays shoots anymore. I haven't seen anyone using one in competition in several years. It sure isn't a price issue, they're cheaper than the Berettas.
