Want a new rifle... but what kind, caliber, etc.????

I've got a rem 700 PSS in .300 ultra mag, with a leupold 3.5-10 variX-III long range scope, and $1000 worth of gunsmithing into it. I have about $500 on deposit at a firearms store, and I want another rifle, but what do I get??

I'm not into varmint hunting, I'll probably never leave this continent, the recoil doesn't bother me, and I'm not all that hot for a semi-auto.

I AM into long range target shooting and American big game hunting.

All I've come up with is a .308 or 7mm-08 so I can have a short action, lighter rifle, but that isn't really grabbing me either.

Any suggestions??

I say go with the 7mm-08. Short action and performance that is just shy of the 7mm Mag. It is a very under utilized round.

Travis, what gunsmithing did you have done to your pss?

If I know you like I think I know you, (you like nice things...I don't blame you!) I'd bet you'd be interested in one of these:

That's one sweet rifle!

BTW, you must have a set that clangs when you walk! After those two shots with your .300 Ultra Mag, I was glad I didn't have one...because I'd feel like I "had" to shoot it...like torture. But of course, I'm a recoil wuss. ;)

Go for a BIG caliber! If 35 or 375 or even 400 caliber's don't trip your trigger, then go for a 45-70/90/110/120! Since there's a movement that has basically given the 45-70 et al. a new life, then hop on the bus! With a Marlin Guide gun, or even a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70 with some of Garrett's monsters... Well, there you have it. Let us know what you decide.

There was a segment on "American Shooter" about the big-bore, black powder(?) 1,000-yard matches. Iron sights, too. One heckuva challenge! Mostly Sharps-type rifles.

Definitely different, and real tough competition.

Years ago, I set up a large steel plate at around 600 yards or so, and built a shooting table. The Sunday afternoon game was in taking turns with an old Trapdoor. Fire the shot, get up, light a cigarette, take a swallow of beer, and then hear the "Clang!"...

I'd go for a 7x57 Mauser myself. Very capable big game rifle, pleasant to shoot. Also uncommon enough to be interesting. I love the caliber and although I don't do a lot of big game hunting myself (prefer targets and varmints), my father used to take a bolt-action 7x57 on Big Game trips all the time, even used it alongside a .300 on an African safari. I'm into handloading and it's a nice cartridge for that too if you're interested.

I'm not sure if Remington offers the Model 700 in that caliber, but I'm sure Ruger's Model 77 does. I'd check around your neighborhood store for a used one.

Second choice would be the 7mm-08
