First and foremost for target practice/accuracy out to at the maximum 150-200 yards, and secondly for possible hunting of small varmints, maybe a coyote and possibly a deer. Price range is up to 500$

I looked at a savage axis 223 that came with a bushnel scope mounted on to it for 380$. I know savage have gone up in popularity the last decade or so and have considered getting one in the past, but they have too many models to choose from so it gets kind of confusing. I talked to a friend of mine and he says savage makes good rifles, but he swears by his remington 700's. I heard awhile back that the 700's were having issue with barrels exploding and receivers cracking so I didn't pay much attention to them.

If you want a heavy barreled .223 varmint rifle, check out the Howa 1500 varmint supreme that CDNN has on closeout for $400. I have a .308 Howa and it is a tack driver. You could put one of the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 scopes Midway has on sale for $110 and still be real close to your $500 limit.

Savage has a package for you and can't be beat for accuracy. In your price range only 2 packages come to mind. Either one will give you sub MOA at 100 yards in a heartbeat. 308 will be the cats meow for you. If it don't say Savage i won't buy it.

That must be the dullest firearms collection in existance lol

Very well could be,but i go for accuracy not looks or the frills. Pretty don't mean squat if it don't shoot good and after 40 years,,,,Savage fills that accuracy spot like no other rifle could.:D Savage wins more comp shoots every year than any other rifle brand out there.

Remington 700 is the most popular rifle out there, just due to the sheer numbers of them produced and how many folks handload you will hear kaboom stories.

I would read up on Tactical Operations Tango 51, a custom premium rifle that's fielded by LA SEB team and many other ABC agencies. They build their rifles on plain jane r700 actions. Guaranteed 1/4 MOA but most average around 1/8 MOA.

A savage will be great for your price range IMO.

Savage also makes the Axis in 25-06 which would be better suited for deer and still small enough to go after varmits. The price is the same.

Not to hijack your thread. I have been looking at the savage axis also. This will be for deer/hog hunting. I can't decide between .243 or .308. Wont ever get more than say a 100yd shot at most.

Both are ideal for deer at that range. With the 308 you would have the option of a heavier bullet though. The 243 is a sweet rifle also. Just my 2 cents,,, i would go with the 308. The 30 cal is just a inhearantly accurate cartridge.

have you looked into a mosin nagant?? plenty good out to 200 yards and easily capable of killing deer and coyote. also ammo is incredibly cheap:D

I can't believe nobody's asked the OP if .223 is legal to harvest game in his state.

Like as was said above- .243 is a dandy chambering. You can easily get 55 or 58gr factory varmint loads or go up to 100gr loadings for larger critterage. It's easily found on just about any wally world shelf, isn't all that expensive, and it won't beat you up and cause you to form bad habits.

I heard awhile back that the 700's were having issue with barrels exploding and receivers cracking so I didn't pay much attention to them.

I think this is the first time I heard of the 700's exploding and cracking. Where can I find more info on this subject because I just bought a 700 in 25-06 last season?

Thanks for all the advice. The reason I want to pick up a .223 over a 22-250 is because ammo (that i've seen) is cheaper for the .223.

One question I have is should I be concerned with rate of twist all that much when choosing a new rifle?
