Want a gun.

I'm a hunter, but I've been wanting a wheelgun to carry hiking. Preferably it's inexpensive and something accurate enough that I might hunt a little with--possibly small game up to 30-40 yards or a finishing shot on a deer. It doesn't really need to be powerfull enough to stop a bear, but I'll consider anything from 22 rimfire to 357 mag. Single or double action is fine, but if it's double I'd like the possibility of use as single action. Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with a 4" .357 Magnum. Light .38's will be fine for small game and heavy .357's are good for everything up to and including deer. Not to mention that .357's are unsurpassed for their performance on less than friendly two-legged varmints.

I'll second Webleymkv's suggestion. You can get a good name brand one used for somewhere around $300, that's what I gave for my 4" S&W 686. Very versatile, quite accurate. I sure wouldn't be bashful about using mine for doing just the sort of thing that you are seeking to do.

If you are thinking about longer ranges, though, you might want to go with a 6" barrel model. Or get a scope of some sort.

For a purely hunting gun a 6" would most likely be better. I suggested a 4" though because it could also be used for CCW should he decide to go that route sometime in the future.

I've been really impressed with the new S&W Model 619. It's a 7 shot six-shooter, single or double action, medium 'L' frame, stainless finish, fixed sights, .357 mag, and a 5" bbl.

For hunting and woods bumming a single action is also great. They are also generally cheaper than a double action. The Ruger Blackhawks dominate the market for that style of revolver.

A 686 is nice piece.. I found mine used for $350. I woulda paid $450-$500 easy. Its an awesome looking gun with a great action.. You WILL love it.

My vote

for the one gun is pretty much the same as above:

S&W 357 with 4-5" barrell. Stainless would be even better.
