Walther vs Glock??

Hello everyone,

I am looking to get a new pistol. I originally had my sights set on a glock 19, since it felt to be about the perfect size, and fit my hand almost perfectly. Throw in the legendary reliability, and that they are easy to find, i thought i found the perfect pistol.

Ofcourse, that was before i handled the walther P99. As much as i love the feel of the Glock 19, the Walther just fit my hand better. I also like the idea of the 3 different trigger actions that the Walther has. And the price is only about $15 more for the Walther. (plus the walther just looks cooler  )

So now i have to come to a decision; Glock or Walther.
I know the Glock will outlive me, i have no doubts about that. But how about the Walther? Will a Walther last as long as a Glock?

What are your thoughts between these two?

Also, i should have mentioned, this pistol will be used for plinking as well as home defense. I dont have plans to get my CCW at this point. Also i dont think i will be able to afford high-caps for either one, so the price difference and availability wont really make much difference to me.

Thanks.

If you like them both the same, get the one that fits the best! It kind of sounds like you already know which one you are going to buy though.:)

The P99 will probably outlast you as well.

There are much more aftermarket goodies (junk?) for the glocks then for the walther. If you are considering getting a 22lr conversion for cheaper practice then glock is the way to go. More tactical lights are available for the glock as well.

For CCW my preference is the p99, its less angular and fits the body better. Another factor is if you like the idea of being able to decock the p99 for a traditional double action. Some people do some people think its a waste and only serves to increase the complexity of the gun. More parts means more parts that could eventually break.

The p99 has the three backstraps for individualized fitting, and if you want they sell wood inserts that you can tailor to your hand. For the glock if you decide you don't like the grip you are out of luck or can get a grip reduction (~$200).

If standard capacity mags are even an idea of a concern the glock has more available, and you could get a price break on a used one, but the walther can be found for about the same amount of money new.

If you decide to change the sights more types are available for the glock but changing the sights out is really easy with walther (and it comes with adjustable sights standard.) As my Mom would say make a list of pros and cons, rank the items on the list then decide.

Both guns will have detractors based on their triggers and what not. Both are great guns with fans as rabid on each side, more glockers here than Waltherers. That being said, my P99 is my carry gun and has been so for two years now. I keep getting more impressed with it.

It is definately a woman.

Thanks for the help guys....

Jason, your right, i have already decided what to buy. Yesterday i decided on the Glock, today i decided on the Walther. :D

It is definately a woman.
Hube1236, in what way do you mean that it is a woman? Curvy but tempermental?

Ofcourse, i should be happy with either of these pistols....but its still a tough decision.

Maybe i just need to ask James Bond what he would use.....

Both good.
The one that fits and points for you is the right choice.
Glock 19 shoots well for me but takes longer to get a hit on target. Just doesn't fit me well. Great for those that it does fit.

Even though it might be a hassle I'd try them out first. Guns are a very personal thing so find what works for you. So don't limit yourself to the G19, excellent as it may be;) But at that price point Glocks and Walthers are the top choices.

After carefully deciding on your primary then you can get whatever catches your fancy. Unlike wives (or husbands) its okay to collect 'em.

But for some biased opinion. Get the G19 as your primary and save up for the P99 for those occasions when you meet people who actually care you have James Bond's gun. Although its known the Glock 19 is often used by some in the real MI6(or SIS), the Queen's Royal Guards, the SAS, and Scotland Yard. I think thats pretty cool.

Woman-

Fit woman, oiled up, tanned, gstring.

Great to look at, great to hold, great to fondle, hard to put away, want to show all of your friends the hottie you got, fun to fire ;)

Accurate.

Okay, thanks for all your help. I have decided to go for the Walther P99 (probably the military version).

I will have to wait another month or so, since i have to establish residency (i just moved from outta state).

I do have 2 questions though.

1. Is it okay to do a lot of dry firing on the walther? Do i need snap caps for it?

2. Are there any tac lights that fit the Walther? (even though i wont be able to afford any).

Thanks for the help.

The P99 fits my hand better, but my observations give the reliability edge to the Glock.

Yeah, you'll hear from a lot of P99 users that they've shot a bazillion rounds through their P99's with no problems - and maybe they have. But I've seen enough problematic P99's - and read about more - to avoid this model myself. (FWIW, at least locally, I don't see P99's at the local IDPA matches any more. But there are still a lot of Glocks, and THEY only seem to malf with crummy ammo.)

The way my luck runs, if Walther makes an occasional lemon, I'm the one who'll get it.

There's another issue, too: S&W is the importer for Walthers . . . look at the Walther USA and S&W websites, and you'll see the same address. Since I choose not to buy S&W until the HUD agreement is OFFICIALLY as dead as the Boston agreement, I won't buy a Walther either.

FWIW, at least locally, I don't see P99's at the local IDPA matches any more. But there are still a lot of Glocks,
Locally I have the ONLY P99, and everybody and their dog has a Glock, ditto all the training classses i've taken, I have the only P99, and about 90% of the other students have Glocks. So it only stands to reason, that Glocks will be more prevelent than P99s at a IDPA match. There are probably more Glocks than Sigs or H&Ks as well. To me this just says that Glock may be better for IDPA competition/games, not neccessarily better for the "real world".

But I've seen enough problematic P99's - and read about more - to avoid this model myself.
And all Glocks KaBoom.
