Walther PPS 40cal. ?

Yikes. I put 75 rounds through a 9mm, found it soft shooting, some flip but not harsh, and the muzzle returned right on target, but knowing how sharply .40s recoil compared to a .45, I'd expect a .40 PPS to be a real handful.
Today, I don't think I'd buy any .40 in preference to a similar 9mm; the additional recoil and reduction in capacity is not balanced by superior (enough) ballistics.

I would think so. My son has a Walther P99 AS in .40 and I have a PPQ in 9MM. My PPQ is a pleasure to shoot. While I shoot his P99 very accurately, it is quite a bit more snappy than my 9MM PPQ.

I only like metal frame .40 pistols and in particular my P229.

Yes. The PPS is a surprisingly handy little gun in 9mm. It shoots more comfortably and is easier to control than I expected in any grip length. It's ahead of the curve in balancing power and recoil for its size. The .40 version... well, it's on the other side of that curve. All the "wow" factor of the 9mm version is missing. It gets replaced with exactly what you'd expect from a small, light, polymer gun in .40 S&W. It's obnoxiously snappy.

In the few hundred rounds I tried, it took a noticeable toll on both my time and accuracy. Yeah, I suppose I could have trained around it. The question would be "why". The 9mm version just shines too brightly for what it is. That's a remarkable 9mm in an almost .380-sized package, and that's enough for me.

Yes. The 9mm PPS is a very soft-shooting pistol that shoots like a much larger gun than it is. The same can't be said of the .40SW variant.

OP: said:
Is the recoil on the Walther PPS 40 a lot more noticeable than the PPS 9mm?

Not "a lot" more noticeable, but if you are recoil sensitive it's noticeable with the .40 S&W PPS. My 9mm PPS M2 is one of my favorites :)

Just my opinion, but it’s going to get harder to find 40 in small carry guns in gun shops. 40s&w kind of hit the skids when the FBI said they were dumping it for 9mm. Many law enforcement agencies were dropping it prior to that, as well. It is the caliber that is most being moved away from in law enforcement use, mainly in favor of 9mm. With all the new self defense loads the 9MM 124 and 147gr is arguably as good or better than 40 with much less recoil, hence the moves. Don’t get me wrong, 40 is still a great round, but the recoil is almost as great as 45, so 9mm or 45acp are becoming the norms.
