Walther PPK/S vs. Kahr MK40

Which is better? If you had the opportunity to trade a .380 Walther PPK/S for a Kahr MK40 (new, .40S&W, full stainless steel frame)

The 380 is a pretty weak cartridge and the Wlather PP series all have miserable sights and two trigger pulls to learn. The 40 Auto is a serious cartridge. The Kahr is reported to be a well made handgun with one of the better DAO trigger pulls. Sounds like a no-brainer to me, but YMMV!

While the Walther PPK is certainly a classic, I wouldn't opt for one when for more or less the same size and weight I could have a Kahr MK9 or MK40.

That said, I just purchased a Kahr MK40. It is small and potent. The second is something the PPK will never be.

Having shot them both, I would highly recommend the Kahr. However, my preference in the Kahr is the MK9 rather than the .40 - due to the fact that the small guns tend to have better manners with 9MM.

I have never felt totally comfortable with the Walther PPK or /S pistol as they tended to fatigue my hand after about 100 rounds. I would recommend the SIG Sauer P230/232 over the Walther. They are quite similiar but the SIG is a better weapon (in my opinion).

If you do get the Kahr, I would also suggest that you consider the Elite model - since it has a superior trigger. I've also heard tell that Kahr will add the elite trigger on any non-Elite gun (for a few £ Pounds)

I carried a Walther PPK/s for many years, during hot weather, when hiding anything bigger was difficult. I never felt really under gunned, and my Walther was 100% reliable.

However, when I handled a Kahr K9 stainless, I traded the Walther in a minute. The K9 is about the same size, holds the same number of rounds, is a 9mm instead of a .380, and has a much better trigger action and sights.
I've never regreted the trade.

I think Walther makes a great gun, but I hate the .380. I really like the P99. I carry a MK40 most of the time. I never feel under gunned with it, but also keep in mind when you have 5/6 rounds it is only for the defensive purpose. If I see someone getting attacked, sorry but with 6 rounds I keep going and call 911 on my cell.

Howdy Ag,

I'm not trying to sound unsympathetic but its not like you have a whole lot of rounds to work with and most people advise you to call 911.

If I were picking which of the two I'd buy first, the Kahr .40 wins, but I would not trade the PPK/S for the Kahr. Trading weapons is not something I will ever do again. Keep the Walther and save up and buy the Kahr later.
