Walther P99 & US Law Enforcement

Does anyone know if the Walther P99 is used by any US Law Enforcement agencies.

I believe the P99 was designed specifically for military and law enforcement sales, I just wondered if it ever managed it.

I dont think the Walther is being used by and Feds. There is a state agency (Highway Patrol) who is using the S&W version in 40 S&W I believe.
Not sure who. :(

Can anyone comment?

MP-5 - You're right, I think NJ were using it, but to be honest I don't even regard the SW99 as the same gun.

Check the P99 threads here in the forum. There some correspondence with a LEO who is the department RO/armorer. The P99 was just adopted by them and he was looking for input. The gun is the official weapon of the german police. It is up against some pretty stiff competition with the dominance of the Glock in the U.S.

It hasn't seen widespread department level use in this country. For the first few years S&W was the importer so it languished in the back room while they pushed their various semiautos.

It would make an excellent department issue if they did. It has all the things a department looks for.

- grips to fit all size hands
- light weight
- reliable
- DA trigger

Any department purchasers out there?;)

to the best of my knowledge the NJSP were issued the sw99 in 40cal and they gave 'em back.

I think it is the Tampa Florida police department that is switching over to the P99. (It may be the Sheriff's department).

The P99 is seeing more use in other countries. The Notinghamshire Police (Yes, the Robin Hood town) in England are using the P990. The P99 has also been adopted by Police in Portugal, Spain, and Malaysia.

I'm not sure that what WaltherP99man has said is true about being the official side arm of the German police. I have seen no evidence of that as of yet. As far as I know they were still using H&K's. The P99 was however developed specifically for the German police, that is true. If anyone has any proof of Germany's use of the P99 it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Jersey SP ordered several thousand specially designed SW99s in 9mm. Hube is right when he refered to them as Frankensteins. First they wanted the pistols made without decockers, then sent them back to have decockers added. There was also a custom trigger design, but I don't recall exactly what it was. Since Citizens are limited to 15 round mags in Jersey, some yahoo bureaucrat thought that it would be best to have Smith modify the 16 round factory LEO mags so that they would only hold 15 rounds. With all the "custom" changes, and butchered mags, the pistols jammed consistently. Smith ended up eating all these specially designed monsters.

I wonder if Smith will destroy the returned pistols, or if they will start showing up Online as "special purchase LEO overruns"?

If anyone can find them I'd be willing to run to $200 but that would be my limit.

Still can't decide if I prefer the P99 9mm or the .40 though, hi-caps still being available for both (16 rounds or 12 sir).

Get one of each. :D I got my .40 first and now I'm getting the 9x19. I will have both in the traditional DA/SA and the military OD green frame.

For my money the 12 rd. .40 mags aren't worth it for only an additional 2 rounds. The 16 rd. 9x19 mags. are a different story though. ;)

gusgus, i wasn't aware of all of the mods the NJSP wanted. that is scary.

hube, i stated "to the best of my knowledge" as i can't state for fact that all NJSP turned theirs back. being that i am from NJ originally, have family there, and still know quite a few LEOs in NJ, i am quite comfortable with my knowledge.

the off the shelf sw99, imho, is a cheap knock off of the p99. got the chance to handle one that was issued to a local LEO a month back and it felt cheap and chintzy.

At lunch to-day 3 NJ State Police were there. One carried a P7m8, one a P7m13, and one had a P99. Don't know what caliber the P99 was, or why his didn't go back with the rest of them..

This is interesting...NJSP never issued any P7M13's and there was a directive issued to every barracks that ALL of the SW99's were to be turned in some time back.

All the troopers were re-issued their, not necessarily the original gun they had, P7M8's after the SW99's were to go back. They had a hard time locating enough leather because some had already been done away with.

They are currently in the process of getting the SIG 228 9mm and testing has been an ongoing thing at their range at Sea Girt.

From what I was told yesterday by another state LE employee who is the head of that agencies firearms division, the NJSP firearms people aren't yet pleased with the 228's.

The other agency that I am associated with is suppose to get their 228's also (300+ guns) but they are not thrilled with them so far and have been pushing, and they were approved, for Glock 19's. The 228's were tacked on to the SP order by the purchasing people to make things easier!
This agency did a sample testing of their people recently on their range with those chosen firing the G19 and the SIG 228. Nearly 100% liked the Glock better.

Before anyone asks and it will come up I'm sure, the .40S&W caliber IS NOT and option for either agency.
