Walther P99 Review First Shots

Today my buddy and I went the "Rampart Range" uphere in Colorado Springs to try out my new P99-0.40. Truth be told, this is the first handgun I ever shot so my opinion will be biased. I loved it, I mean I heard music. The gun behaved exceptionally well. No jams.

I did not know what to expect as far as a recoil and was quickly surprised by a pronounced, but subtle kickback. I was shooting standing prone at a target 25 yards or so away. Out of the eleven shots (1 in the chamber) I hit the target six times- two of which in the circle I was actually aiming for.

The next excercise was to blast away at a metal tub 75 yards away. I hit that thing six times.

My buddy and his wife then shot it- it jammed twice on them, but I think it was the windmill they gave the piece after firing- no attempt at holding the gun steady.

I then shot his D/A ruger 357 with 357's and 38's. Much more pronounced "concussion" at firing- I felt like I was standing next to a base drum. Completely different feel.

I fired throughout the afternoon with it and was hitting the target(s) okay, but I know it is me- looking down the barrel and seeing the sights dance all over.

I purchased a gun that comes complete with adjustible grips, sights and a few other adjustments, I would like to earn this gun by being able to hit a broad side with it. What would be some ggod exercises to increase shooting accuracy- I know shooting a lot of rounds is the key, but are there methods to get better faster? Also, how often should I clean the gun, after firing it, or does a good fingerprint wipedown work?

I shot about a 100 rounds through a rental gun. I found it extremely accurate. Touching groups at 7 yards.

However, it was a definite jammer. Another, however:

1. Range gun - dirty?
2. I was firing it one handed with my nondominant hand - having broken my wrist
that summer on my dominant hand.
But, I have put 500 rounds or more like that with my G26 and no jams.

Just one gun - limited sample. I don't think it is worth a significant increment in price over a Glock.

I really did not notice a significant price increase over the Glock, maybe the Glock selection was limited, although I still would have bought the Walther. It fits my hand well. Any good target shooting practices?

Walther P99's barrel chamber is tighter and produce higher velocity compared with Glock 9mms. The tighter the tolerance, the prone it is to jam. However, with factory ammo and minimal cleaning, it functions perfectly and points more naturally vs. Glock.

I had some jamming problems with my 9mm P99. I was using Sellier and Bellot ammo. I didn't think it was the ammo because it never jammed my Beretta.

Well, anyone who has a Beretta knows that you can't jam it unless you use rocks for ammo! The S&B also jammed my friend's Glock 17, so I decided to try some Winchester ammo. I haven't had a jam since!

I have not had any jams in my P99. I shoot S&B 115gr JHP all day with no problems at all. It's a great gun, and great ammo!!!! :)

I had no jams at all with my P99. The gun is designed around 124gr weights and likes them warm. The warmer the better. Another weight recoil rod spring assem is available from Walther if you want to shoot something cooler.

never had a jam in my P99 9mm with any ammo I used except when I tried to use a P88 hi cap mag in it. it's a great product. enjoy it...Dan in GA

My P99 in .40 has been nothing short of wonderful in the year that I've had it. No jams, great accuracy, but even though I'm used to the trigger now, I still wish it was a bit smoother. Still, it's easily among my favorite pistols.
